Title: Not one for the Ticker
Post by: Cynic on October 09, 2010, 01:19:49 AM
I haven't ridden with you guys in too long, really since early last year when I picked up the BMW. However, since you are my original online moto gang I wanted to post something here. They're aren't many that can share and appreciate my pain, but  lucky  [roll] for you, you can.

I crashed on Sept. 30th on Hwy 101 heading south when the rear wheel on my BMW locked up. The reason for the lock up is still under investigation, but the bike was recently serviced (with in 5k miles) and had been reasonably looked after.

Details of the crash can be found http://cynic13th.livejournal.com/233398.html (http://cynic13th.livejournal.com/233398.html)

I'm ok, pretty much. I did break my left Tibia in 2 places, and now have a plate and 10 screws holding it together. I also broke the radius of my left arm, which apparently gets nothing to heal.

Like I said, in the title and intro, I'm not sure this counts as ticker fuel. I haven't ridden with you guys in quite a while, and It's BMW's fault... so...

Thanks for reading. I'll probably be on more since well I can't ride for 3-5 months I'll have to get my moto fix somewhere.  ;D

Cheers,
Scott

Oh wow...sorry to hear that.  Glad you made it out OK.  Care to post up more details?  Perhaps there are things from your off that others can take away with them--it might be cues that something bad is happening on the bike, recovery times, dealing with a manufacturer when something like this happens.  That and I think a lot of us are genuinely concerned about you--regardless of what bike this happened on or that you're not around a lot.

I'm going to put it up on the ticker to remind people that crashes happen for lots of reasons, not just because we took a corner hot or didn't service the chain in 14 years.  Desmoquattro had one that we tossed up there that wasn't his fault either--some tweaker on a bicycle rammed into his tail!  I mean, I'm pretty sure that even if he was checking his mirrors every .0056 seconds he'd never expect a bicycle to land on top of him!

It's now been a little over 2 weeks since the crash. I'm slowly healing and dealing with life.

Getting around on a walker is slow... omg so slow. But with a broken arm and leg, I'm pretty happy to be getting around at all. Thanks goodness for my Super lady wife, with out her, this would be near impossible. I get tired pretty quickly, though this is getting better, but still having help with meal prep, and showering etc. is very nice. Several of my close friends have helped out with some basic cleaning etc, since I can't really push around a vacuum.

After talking to my insurance (both medical and auto) it looks like I'm still going to be out at least 5k not including loss of pay. So I might have to go after BMW directly... I'm nervous about this, but we'll see. Any advice in this regard would be appreciated.

Over all though, I have to say it could have been so much worse, so I'm thankful for what I have.

Cheers

jesus...that sounds brutal.  Glad that you have a s.o. around to help out.  I know how that goes.  Mine had to give me a bath every night when my hands were broken.  I think he enjoyed certain aspects of it--My breasts were never cleaner....  [laugh]

Damn, that sounds pretty ugly. Lucky for you all the cars stopped!

Did you ever figure out what caused the rear to lock up?

It's been 3 weeks.

I'm getting better, got the stitches out of my leg early this week, and got another whole set of xrays. Doc says I'm healing good and might be on crutches a bit earlier than originally though.

I'm still not sure what caused the rear to lock up, inspectors are supposed to send me a report from a visual inspection soon.

Anytime a sentence involves, "the stitches come out" it can't be good.

4 weeks now.
Looks like I'm going to have some good scars on my leg. I'll try and post pictures.

Still it's very tiring getting around, and I'm still so slow. My average speed is dropping. I wonder if I'm paying for years of too much speed  ;D

Cheers

It does appear that your career as a leg model is probably over.
