Okay, here it is.
My wife and I keep four types of alcohol in the house. Beer, wine, Smirnoff Ice, and tequila. Unfortunately, the beer is for my wife and the Smirnoff Ice is for me. The wine is usually a Reisling, which is sweet, and if I have a margarita it's usually also sweet. So I'm not much of a drinker, and what I like tends to be sweet.
I'd like to expand my horizons some, as the only cocktail that remotely worked for me was Seven & 7. I discovered it in my early 20s and have stuck with that since. It's okay, but I'd like to try something a little more upscale.
I thought I'd want to drink Scotch, cause it seemed mas macho and sophisticated. I ordered what I was told was a good Scotch, ordered it on the rocks, and almost imploded. Couldn't even drink it, and I was in the company of three women. Sad. Can't do martinis. I like margaritas, but they're also somewhat lacking in the manliness dept.
So basically I tend to like something with some sweetness to it, and want something kind of classic. Any recommendations on a cocktail to try or a liquor to try? I just bought a bottle of Maker's Mark to have in the house, as I'm trying to have other liquors available in the house and that has a good conotation to me. Was Scotch on the rocks a tactical errror? Someone told me to start with Scotch and soda. I don't know.
Joel
I can't stand scoth...
Vodka is my poison of choice.
try it with OJ if you like sweet.
I agree, though I can't drink any vodka straight. All of them taste like rubbing alcohol.
I tend to also like sweet drinks.
My fav is the Long Island Iced Tea
I can drink those by the gallon :D

Since you already have the Makers, any one of these will do [thumbsup]
They are all sweet and still man card approved.

*edit* That was supposed to be a direct link to Makers recipies but you must age verify first. Sorry for the extra work.
The Rusty Nail might be a good cocktail for you to try. Basically a glass of scotch (Dewars is fine), on the rocks, with a 1/2 shot of Drambuie.
Totally changes the dynamic of the scotch, cutting its edge with a hint of sweetness. And it sounds "manly".
Cheers!
Vodka needs an olive, tonic or oj to be good.
I prefer my liquors to be colored.
Vodka tonic or gin and tonic.
Vodka or light rum or tequila and any sort of fruit juice.
Dark and stormy: dark rum and ginger beer.
Brutal hammer: red wine and vodka.
White Russian: vodka, Kahlua and milk.
Arnold Palmer: iced tea vodka and lemonade.
I don't like scotch either. If I'm drinking whiskey straight it's usually Irish or Canadian.

Definitely qualifies as sweet. Four or five in a short period of time will get you real drunk and hung over. For the most part, sweet and dark = hangover.

For some reason, scotch tends to be nice to me the next morning.......beer and/or red wine usually ruin me the next day......especially those 11% beers that Drkwng likes to drink! They are Damn tasty though!
With whiskey around, I'd recommend a whiskey sour.
Screw the bottled mix, and buy yourself some lemon juice instead.
Make some simple syrup. Just boil water, and add an equal amount of sugar. Easy-peazy.
My usual formula is 1 shot whiskey, 1 shot juice, 1/2 shot syrup. Stir, pour into an ice-filled glass.
Try one that way, and adjust the syrup level to suit your taste.

I love Scotch. Preferably like my women. Over 18 years old and neat.
If you want a cocktail that's easy to drink, go for a White Russian.
I also like a Tall Ship, which is equal parts Kalhua, Bailey's, and Drambuie over ice.
Maybe try my other favorite, Absinthe, if you want something potent and less "frew frew".

Arnold Palmer: iced tea vodka and lemonade.
For the record, there's no alcohol in an arnold palmer (but I imagine it would be good with it :) )
Bloody Maria - Bloody Mary with Tequila instead of Vodka. With our home made bloody mix - good!
Sweet, un-girly drink = Captain Morgan's Rum and Ginger Ale.

And yes, Manhattans were what I was going to suggest for the OP as well.
They're better with rye, but you can make them with bourbon alternately. The Makers you bought will do just fine.
Pick up some sweet vermouth and a bottle of angostura bitters.
Mix 1.5-2 shots of rye or bourbon and a little less than 1 shot of sweet vermouth on ice.
Fill a rocks glass with ice and drip 2 or 3 drops of bitters onto the ice.
Strain the liquor mix into the rocks glass.
Add a cherry or two and enjoy.
Depending on personal taste, vary the ratio of liquor to vermouth. I like mine at about a 2:1.
It's a good sweet-ish drink but still has the great flavor of whatever liquor you choose to make it with too.
[thumbsup]
Dark rum, Blackstrap rum if you like molasses or sweet drinks.
Bourbon. Bookers if you have deep pockets, Evan Williams single barrel if not.
Pinnacle vodka is a great, inexpensive, high quality Vodka. I make my Bloody Mary with it.
Pyrat Pistol is great rum.
Canadian Whisky can be a great sipping drink for a good price.
JM
Another outstanding liquor, if you don't mind dropping some cash on it, is Crown Royal Special Reserve.
That shit is unbelievably smooth.
Something else that can be fun/tasty is infusing liquors. Canning jars work great to experiment with. Liquor of your choice + flavoring agent of choice + a week or two = flavored liquor.
Whole coffee beans work really well with vodka or blanco tequila. Just toss a few in the bottle.
A whole vanilla bean makes your own vanilla vodka, which can then be mixed with whatever. Works well with rum, too.
Black pepper vodka makes a killer bloody mary.
My personal favorite, tho, is bacon-and-maple-syrup flavored bourbon. Great with pancakes.
My personal favorite is Jack Daniels and coke. Preferably green label Jack when possible.
Here's another good one I just remembered.
You said you already have tequila, you'll just need a few more things for it.
1 shot of espresso, a little more than a shot of tequila, a little more than a shot of Kahlua, a little less than a shot of Bailey's
Either mix it in a glass with ice or chill it and strain it into a chilled martini glass. It's called a Tijuana Speedball.

I don't NEED it either, but it doesn't hurt/help.
I'd suggest an Old Fashioned. It's the ORIGINAL cocktail, and was an early 19th century breakfast drink in the early republic.
The traditional version goes like this:
2 oz bourbon whiskey
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 splash water and 1 tsp sugar (or simple syrup)
1 maraschino cherry
1 orange wedge
a feather from a rooster tail (as a garnish)
Mix sugar, water and angostura bitters in an old-fashioned glass. Drop in a cherry and an orange wedge. Muddle into a paste using a muddler or the back end of a spoon. Pour in bourbon, fill with ice cubes, and stir.
When I make them at home, I skip the water and sugar and just use 7-up or mist.

Sweet, un-girly drink = Captain Morgan's Rum and Ginger Ale.
Delicious.
Or Captain and Dr. Pepper.
The sweet tea vodka drinks (Jeremiah Weed, Sweet Carolina, Firefly, etc) can be deadly.
I like Canadian Club with Canada Dry. Sure, it's just rye and ginger, but I like to think of them as "Oh Canada (you sexy temptress)"
recipe for instant asshole...
just add alcohol.
learning to appreciate a good scotch can take a while.
I prefer Belvini or my favorite Laphraog 12 year. Its a single malt silky smooth and great with a slice of super aged cheddar. A little of both goes a long way. For good Vodka, Pinnacle is good , I believe it is made in the same distillery as grey goose which is pretty darn good. Its their cheaper label vodka. Same recipe same vodka, different label.
Sambuca which is a liquer is fabulous with a shot of espresso after a meal as a desert coffee.Nuke a couple of whole coffee beans before you make that drink and then put them in your glass before adding the sambuca. The warmd beans will release their oils and you will have an awesome tatsing drink. Careful, you will be drinking warm alcohol. Sleep is imminent, even with the coffee. It is amazing, I watched Rossi win in Sapang last nite his 46th win for Yamaha having one of these drinks and nearly fell asleep in moto 2.......
Then there is the old fashioned I am gonna get drunk drink.............Long island iced tea. Careful if you have one or two or three of these because in the am you will think you have been hit by a train.
Whatever your poison do it in moderation and as always, never drink and ride or drive.

I like the way it tastes better when mixed with coke. It's a little smoother than black label. The really good stuff in Jack Daniels Single Barrel, but I won't use it in mixed drinks.
I might not be able to get you into my favorite Turkey/Coke with your sweet tooth, but I might be able to convince you to try a Tom Collins. Or a John Collins, Juan Collins, Vodka Collins. . . . . The bartenders around here don't know much, so I just say Whiskey Collins.
Collins:
ice
2 oz. booze of choice (Tom=Gin, John=Bourbon, Juan=Tequila)
2 oz. lemon juice
1 teaspoon sugar (gomme) syrup
soda water
slice of lemon
1 colored cherry
I can't believe I forgot the drink I've been making weekly after I bought a bottle of Brazilian Rum: Caipirinha. Might not be the manliest thing around, but it is damn good.
I'll let the lady show you how to make it: http://www.lebloncachaca.com/caipirinha/ (http://www.lebloncachaca.com/caipirinha/)
Rum with just about anything.
Jägerbomb
My favorite if looking to sip and relax:
2 ice cubes
cover with Bombay Saphire
drip of Martini and rossi
splash of olive juice
2 olives
swirl and remember why my life is good.
I think you are asking the wrong question. When choosing and alcoholic beverage don't ask yourself, "what would I like to drink?" ask yourself, "why am I drinking?" The "what to drink" follows naturally from that.
Sitting down to dinner or having tapas? Drink whatever wine goes best with the food.
Spending a day in the park playing softball with the guys? A cooler full of a light bodied beer will take care of you.
Having a bunch of people over for an informal summer party. A batch of sangria is fun and serves the whole crowd. Or fruity rum punch for something with a bit more kick.
In an upscale cocktail lounge and need to impress the people you are with? Shot gun a can of Schlitz because make the beast with two backs trying to impress people. WOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Have a tough day and need something to take the edge off? Straight hard liquor is what you need. Bourbon or a Gin martini.
Trying to get drunk enough to sleep with that ugly thing sitting across from you? Lots of booze and easy to drink are the qualities you need to get the quantity you have to have. Long Island Ice Tea is in order (or any local dive bar specialty that has the word "swamp" or "death" in it).
Is your therapist touching you inappropriately? Brandy and Rohypnal.
Are you a toothless wino giving out $3 blow jobs to other toothless winos but you just spent your last few bucks on a hit of smack? Cough medicine. Gasoline is 10% ethanol now. Hand sanitizer? Or maybe trying sucking on one those urinal mints at the mini-mart, make the beast with two backs I don't know.

heres one of my own: Vodka basil limeade. Muddle fresh basil ( 5-6 leaves) with 2 lime wedges and 1 tbsp of sugar. Add Ice, 1 shot of good vodka, and top with soda water and a splash of sprite. Mix it all up and garnish with a lime. How about a mint julep?
Or mayhaps a one eared russian? ( make like a white russian and sub van gough espresso vodka.

After years of asking, I finally found a local liquor store that carried Dutch Oude Jenever (the Dutch invented gin, you know, not those bloody John Bulls) - it's a juniper & spice flavored neutral spirit (like gin) but the Oude ("Old" as opposed to Jonge/Young Jenever which is clear) is aged in oak to give it a bit of color & a nice carmel/vanilla note. Your wife drinks beer, and you drink the Smirnoff Ice. :o This may be a lost cause! ;D
Anyway, I'm similar in that I don't like many alcohols. I'm not a sweet freak though, so not totally the same. I tried to like Scotch and/or Whiskey...no luck.
If you like Margaritas, I say stick with them. Stop ordering them blended, and stop using mixers to up the manliness factor. Never order a flavored one.
Here's a kick ass margarita that is anything but girly:
4 parts Tequila (something good...I like Patron or Heredura Silver) [Someone here will likely say this is shit, but whatever]
2 parts fresh lime juice
1 part Triple Sec
1 part Grand Marnier
1 part Simple Syrup
1 part cheap beer (i.e. Bud Light) - this is optional, but I like it.

Gotta add that to my collection. I like juniper, but don't care for gin.
Has anyone said mojito yet? If not, mojito. It is about the highest you can go on the sweetness scale without a compulsory maraschino cherry and umbrella garnish.
That being said, I don't think many loved the taste of scotch the first time they drank it. Like other straight liquors it is probably best described as an acquired taste (and I am glad I acquired it). So, you might take another crack at it. Since you already like blended whiskeys (Seagrams 7), you might try a variant, like Crown Royal or Canadian Club - these tend to be a bit sweeter, but no less strong than a single malt scotch.
If Talisker was the first Scotch I tasted, Id probably say I hate Scotch.
I love Scotch but that shit crosses the line......think burnt rubber mixed with diesel fuel coupled with a honey finish......eeeesh!
That's a good point. I don't see what people see in the Johnny Walkers, for example, and I have tried everything from red all the way up to platinum, or whatever. They just taste kind of stale to me.
I found a good use for a bottle of red that was given to me a couple years ago. Opened it this evening and made a Rusty Nail. Worked well!

MUST. HAVE. MORE. DETAILS!
Pretty straight forward, really.
First, you need something to steep your concoction in. I use wide-mouth canning jars. It's easy to seal them up tight and they pour decently. Plus you look like SuperHick when you say "Y'all gotta try this!" and whip out a mason jar of 'shine.
Next: Pick a bourbon. Something decent, that you could actually drink on its own.
Pour the bourbon into the jar. Reserve just a little bit.
Fry up a couple of slices of bacon. Crispy is better than floppy. Don't worry if it's greasy, you'll deal with that later, but make sure it's done.
Add bacon to bourbon in jar.
Add a dose of maple syrup. A shot will do. I will take it as an article of faith that you have and use REAL maple syrup, that came from REAL maple trees. If you don't, then go get some. This is not an area where a person should skimp.
Top up the jar with bourbon. Less airspace is better. Air steals alcohol. Greedy, greedy air. >:( Seal up the jar. If there's any bourbon left over, pour yourself one and enjoy it while you eat the rest of the pound of bacon you cooked up because you needed 2 slices for your booze.
Put the jar in the cabinet and let it mature for a week or so. Before you enjoy the fruits of your labor, I recommend putting it in the freezer overnight and letting any extra fat coagulate. You can skim it out, or use a coffee filter in a funnel (or the coffee basket) and decant the bourbon into whatever vessel you so choose. Another jar. The original bottle. Your camelback. Or the Mrs. Butterworth's squeeze bottle that's empty now that you realized just how good REAL maple syrup is. And that resealable cap makes the perfect pour spout for shots.
OOOOHHH!!!!!!! That's gonna be yummy... Thanks! [thumbsup]

Yeah, there's no reason to eff with really good booze doing stuff like this. It's like cooking with wine. You're gonna be screwing with the flavor, so middle of the road is fine, but it has to be good enough that you'd drink it on its own.
Same goes with infused vodkas. I used Smirnoff for my first batch and while they tasted fine, they still had a harsh finish. It would have been well worth the extra $4 to get Svedka.
i've used a different bacon bourbon recipe that is yummy
cook 6 slices bacon
eat it
add grease/chunkies to jar with bourbon (i use Buffalo Trace or Makers)
steep 1-2 weeks
strain with cheesecloth
drink-
bacon bourbon
brown sugar simple syrup
bitters
twist of bacon swizzle
havent made it in awhile...fights with my Simvostatin :P
