Title: What to get a 3 yo boy?
Post by: Slide Panda on October 11, 2010, 07:13:24 AM
My good friends little boy is turning 3 in about a month so I've got a quest for a good present. There's a few house rules I must abide:
1. No Jiu-Jitsu in the house
2. No guns/hand held weapons
3. No fire (includes all combustibles)

And I won't be the jerk to get something battery powered and noisy

I've long threatened to get him 'Babies 1st siege engines' http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/warfare/81e6/ (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/warfare/81e6/) - but I think that's really a couple years off. Last year he got the 'Young Mad Scientist blocks' http://www.thinkgeek.com/geek-kids/1-3-years/b78f/ (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geek-kids/1-3-years/b78f/) and a Ferrari 458 Hot Wheel (and a lesson on how to say Ferrari)

Thinkgeek has some good offerings - but I figured I'd tap the collective wisdom to see if anyone's got some cool notions. So gang, thoughts?

Ok.. let me amend that. I won't be the jerk to get a super noisy toy - battery powered or not. Besides thinking those sorts of toys are obnoxious, the soon-to-be 3 yo's little brother arrived last week. No way in hell I'm adding a noisy toy to a house with a barely hatched infant.

I might be an ass, but I'm not a total jerk.

That was 10 years ago for me, I can't remember what we got our kiddo back then. I have no "safe for work" ideas. Puzzles? They're pretty quiet. My wife rides herd on 2 year olds at a pre-school (yes, she's crazy...) and they love puzzles.

I know Nate - I got a laugh... right until I imagined his mother borrowing some of dads combat gear and coming after me with it. Then I pooped myself a bit  ;D

The Kiddimoto is pretty cool... even if they have Hayden versions of their bikes. But at over $100, that's a bit dear. I'd only do if they can guarantee it'll support 225 pounds... for that much money, I want my rides on it too!

Oh check that... the UK site has a Foggy - double check... US version only has hayden and Toseland  :(

+1 on the bicycle. My youngest is turning 3 next year and it sounds like he's getting his first real bicycle.

You planning to get him a pedal bike, or a kick bike like those above?

Another detail is that smaller, is probably better. They are pretty cramped for space a the moment. Currently in a not so big, 2br place.

If he were your kid, I'd recommend this (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=41299.0). One of those "I'll just take care of this until you're old enough to appreciate it," gifts.

But since he's not...

I think a kick bike is a good idea. Can't get them on two wheels early enough.  [thumbsup]

Just a thought: you mentioned that the little guy had a new baby brother, and that space is at a premium at his place. Not sure what his family's child-care situation is like, but what would you say to taking him off his parent's hands for an afternoon or two and doing something that he'd like? Zoo. Aquarium. Pub crawl. You know, whatever. Gives his parents a break, lets him do something cool, costs you maybe $50 in tickets and junk food, and he'll think you're the coolest dude ever.

Other thought: whatever else you get him, give his parents a savings bond in his name to go toward college for him.

Pub crawl, nice.

Actually have already offered to take him to Boo at the Zoo here.  [thumbsup]

The bonds a nice idea, I like that.

Oh I offer to take care of him... They just don't take me up on it so often due the fact he learns stuff with me  ;D

For example, I taught him that Basement Cat lives at my house and will eat him if he goes into the basement w/o an adult. Basement Cat was easier than trying to justify to a 2.5 yo that it's dangerous down there, as it's where all my tools and dangerous stuff lives. But now he worries about other basements too... haha

Kids like to build things, no? It's been a while since I was 3 though so I don't know.  :P

my nephew loves his moms itouch and my gfs iphone. he knows how to unlock the screen, go to the menu apps, and open the light saber app. then he runs around the house trying to stab you with the phone.  ;D

A big cardboard box/fort/spaceship/submarine..................

THIS!

And some blocks. Not some weird specialty stuff that will make robots and catapults and shit. Just some square and rectangular blocks of wood with a nontoxic finish. That's it. Watch how fast the blinking noisy shit gets tossed aside when he realizes he can build a mini block fort inside his big cardboard fort.

sac

/and fake bugs so he can scare his sisters

A boy who's three years old most certainly needs a spanking.   ;D

Funny, but I don't know why. Maybe cause my son is getting close to that age and I would agree sometimes.

My 4 year old twins adore the Memory Game.  Inexpensive, interactive and funny as hell to watch my daughter beat adults that think they have to take it easy on her.......in the beginning.

As much as I want to get 'cool' stuff I really like the bond or gift to a college fund. He might not care now, but he's 3 like he'll remember and any money in now has a nice long time to build.

So I think I'll use most of my budget to that end. Now anyone know where to get a small toy Monster?

Go to an Army/Navy Surplus store and pick up a canvas military knapsack. Couple other various surplus items and you will be the coolest guy ever. My entire youth was spent toting around an East German satchel that took on the role of mountain climbing backpack, dynamite charge, G.I. Joe hauler, etc. The fact that it is legit and not some cheesy knock-off makes it that much better.

His Dad's got more of that stuff than I could suss up at a store, and it's the real deal.
