I noticed that I'm missing this shield on the bottom of my lower triple. What purpose does it serve? I'm sure the engineers put it there for some reason. Do I need to have it or can I live without it?

I made a carbon one. I figured on my s4r it was to direct airflow into the rad.
I believe the parts manual calls it a smoke deflector though I couldn't say why. I changed the OEM part with a CF replacement, both for the bling and the OEM Metal one weighs a ton. From the weight I think it seems to be made of steel and I think probably the heaviest part that I've replaced with a CF replacement piece.
Originally it was flipped up - I'm guessing to direct more air up to the airbox. I then flipped it down to direct more air to the oil cooler. I have recently flipped it back up again. As far as I can tell neither seems to make any difference. But maybe someone can do some wind tunnel and dyno testing to verify ;)
I'd hazard a guess that it's not so much to direct air into one thing of another, but rather to make sure the airflow is relatively smooth.
Turbulent air doesn't cool as well as a smooth airflow.
Mind you, it's not like your bike is lacking cooling at speed and I bet you can live without it.
I remember once in band camp, a guy took the splash guard off his bike and crashed the very next day..............
To increase weight in the front. [cheeky]
It's a spoiler to make wheelie-ing easier. ;D
I removed my years ago.

Same here. No ill effects after 5 riding seasons (that I know of).
It does wonders now that my bike is front wheel drive. really plants that tire down for burnouts. I just gotta fit a 200 ntec on it now[bacon]
The smoke deflector is in case Spy Hunter cuts in front of you and drops the smokescreen
