Title: Found weird coin in change
Post by: ducatiz on October 14, 2010, 04:49:57 PM
had a handful of pennies in my car and noticed one of htem has a weird design -- looked closely and it says "republica portugesa" and on the reverse "estado da india" and "10 centavos" dated 1961...

india?  googling a bit i find that it's from a group of colonies in india that portugal kept until 1961.

coin is worth about $10.  nice.

Funny you should mention coins. In my local newspaper this week was a coin collector showing 3 of the coins he has and what they are worth now. One of the coins he has was shown with a pic. I saw the coin and noticed that is the same as the 2 coins I have that were handed down to me when my Grandmother passed away.

They are worth $185000 each.  :o

So I started to have a panic attack because I thought they would be worth a couple of hundred dollars at the most & I can't make the beast with two backsen remember where I have put them. My brother got a Fob Watch which I wanted and I was starting to think I got the better deal!  :D

I took another look at the article and the one there is a 1902 minted proof (I don't know what this means, the proof bit) that was made for some bloody Governor of Victoria. I think mine are a 1896 and a 1906  ???

So, probably still only worth a couple of hundred.  :'(

A proof is a first run, like a test run. My dad is a coin collector and buys proof sets every year.
