Title: 2009 M1100S
Post by: Greg on October 17, 2010, 12:44:17 PM
The local Duc dealer has some 2009 M1100S models on the floor. Any suggestions on what kind of discount I should be looking at versus a 2011 model?

if you planned on buying new anyways... the "S" package for free sounds good. (same price as base 2011 m1100)

That's what I paid for my S. You could probably do a little better now.

Yeah I'd have to trade my 2006 S2R-1000. Not sure what I could get for it, I suppose it would depend on if I want to hassle with taking all the good bits off (see sig) and sell them seperately, but I'm sure I could get at least $6,000 for it.

I think the S2R 1000 is the best looking 2 valver ever made. I'd hot it up ala Travman and keep it. They are worth a fortune here in Oz. I have seen them cost more than an S4R.

Hmm yeah - just looked up the KBB trade in, and it is only $4,300 so I would definitely be pulling some after-market pieces and selling them seperate. That's down the road though, not even sure I'll go through with this and it also depends on my bonus this year.
I also want a track bike, so may just keep this and look for an SV650 or something similar

Yeah I know it's a good looking bike, but I'm starting to want a little more power and the Ohlins would be real nice as well. If I start upgrading I"ll be looking at the same cost as a new bike anyway. What started me looking at the new Monsters was this bike on the Desmoporsche website. That is the first one of the new models that I have seen that I really like. The low exhaust really cleans up the lines on the bike.

had one of those for awhile. thought the look was neat for awhile, then it wore off, all my buddies joked with me it sounded/looked like a buell now, and eventually i sold that system for more traditional pipes.

Makes the bikes look MUCH slimmer.

Did you ever drag it during hard cornering? It seems like it could be low enough to cause problems.

Never dragged it, or the belly pan / cowl I have now - suspension is set pretty firm on my bike. This was on the 1999 M900

To an Australian... this is almost free.  OK I'm exagerating... but @ $10,500... its somewhat less than HALF what you'd need to pay where I live.   Go for it... maybe buy me a spare one while you're at it, eh?  ;D

A couple of months ago, I got lucky on a pretty good deal.

Short Story: I saw an 09 M1100S on EBay (demo, 425 miles, Termi kit + tank protector) that sold for $8,500. I emailed the dealer and requested 2nd dibs if the deal fell through. Dealer emailed me the next day & said it was mine if I still wanted it because the winning bidder had backed out. So, for $8,500 + $345 (freight from Ducati) + $550 (Shipping from dealer to me) + $585 (State T/L) = less than $10k I got a new 09 M1100S in the garage.

I put another 350 miles on it and had the first service done ($155). The only nit-pick is the well-known cold-start glitch, but I've got the process down to where it usually starts on the 2nd try. At ~1,500 miles, its running great!

I am almost positive that this cold start issue is a computer problem where it doesnt reset after running hot.  The computer still tries to start the bike as if it where still warmed up instead of cold and sitting.  It will always start up on the second start if you turn it off and turn it back on.  That is when the computer resets to a "cold" start.  I had this on my 1100 and it would always start after a "reboot" of turning it off and then back on.

I disagree.  In order to meet emissions tests I believe these bikes are set-up from the factory virtually starving for fuel at start up.  Just barely enough fuel to fire it up and no more.... and often this minimal fuelling simply just isnt enough to fire up the boiler... until you "prime" it and have a second attempt.  My experience is this: Increase fuel to air on start up and it will start instantly first time every time.

Prime it how? By turning the bike on or flicking the throttle?

Title: Re: 2009 M1100S
Post by: ungeheuer on October 25, 2010, 12:49:16 AM
Oh.. so your first "attempt" is just a key turn without attempting to start it and on the second turn of the key you hit the starter button?  How then do you know it wouldnt have started the first time?  ;)

the talk of $10k m1100's is making me wonder about my choice of a 796 :)
I may have to shop around for new old stock before I do a deal on a 796 with free ABS (2011).

Bummer - turns out the 2009 M1100S does not have ABS, and If I'm going to splurge on a new bike I really want ABS. Guess I'll have to wait and see if mayby a 2010 model shows up with ABS. In the meantime I'll do some upgrades to the current bike. I already snagged an Ohlins shock from an S4rs :D

No.  99% of the time my bike would fire up just fine when I turned the key and hit the starter.  Every once in a while - and only after the bike had been sitting for a long time - I would turn the bike on, hit the starter and it would just spin without firing.  I would shut the bike off, turn the key back on and it would fire right up.  This is why I think it is the computer not resetting because, the computer is supposed to reset when it goes through the start up process every time.  But if the bike was run and the temperature changed in the engine by cooling down, the problem would occur.

Prime it how?

Like this:

Every once in a while.... I would turn the bike on, hit the starter and it would just spin without firing.  I would shut the bike off, turn the key back on and it would fire right up.

Most occasions the miserly fuel delivery was just enough to fire the bike into life.  But sometimes not - and on the sometimes not occasions it started on the second attempt.... having already been fed unburnt fuel from the first failed attempt.

But this assertion of mine? Take it as a well intended counter-theory based on my experience of entirely resolving the occasional starting shenanigans by increasing fuel delivery at start up.  Or dismiss it as BS.  I dont mind either way  [thumbsup].

i agree to the prime it method described above. i've never had one not start using that method unless the battery was toast.
