Title: Removing those "pucks"
Post by: uclabiker06 on October 23, 2010, 12:14:39 PM
Okay, so from what I understand the rubber puck like things that are wedged between the fins of the engine serve no purpose except to dampen sound so that the bike will pass noise regulations.  I think they are a hinderance to air flow so I want to remove them.  I tried removing them a while ago but they were pretty uncooperative.  I have heard that they fall off on their own after a while but I wanted to remove them now!  Any ideas what would be the best way to do so? Thanks.

i just stick a hook and pull hard, most of them come out without issue.

The technical term for them is duck droppings... and they'll fall out on their own.

Would it make make sense to allow them to fall out on their own? Considering what they are there for.

I don't know, but i nicked my frame trying to get one out!  Its really small though so I'm not really mad.  I got most of them out but some are just too difficult so I am going to let them stay and see if they fall off on their own in a few months or years.  If not then I'll have another go at it.  Seems like the fins will cool the bike better without these stupid things in the way .

My bike is a 2001 and most of them are still there. It might be safe to say that if you want them out you're gonna have to take them out yourself.

BTW, noticed your screen name. You ever get to do any canyon runs down here? Assuming you still go to UCLA and live in SoCal.
