Title: M796 stops 4 out of 5 times about a minute after first start every morning
Post by: jvax on October 26, 2010, 05:56:27 AM
The title says it all.

Every morning, I put the key in, (*) turn the ignition on, wait for about 10 seconds, pull the clutch, start the bike without ever touching the throttle.
She always starts at the first try.  I leave her to warm up while I put my gear on, and after about a minute, the engine just stops.
I turn the key off for a few seconds and restart from (*), and this time the bike stays powered on for as long as it takes me to finish gearing up and ride away.

It's not particularly cold in the morning, usually between 50F/10C and 60F/15C degrees, so I don't think it's a cold start issue.
I've had her for about 3 weeks and she's at 880 clicks.
I rode everyday since I got her, around 30km to and back from work, and one long ride the weekend before the last.
For breaking the engine in, I made sure I let her warm up every time before riding out.
I've also kept her below 4500 rpm and tried using all the gears where/when possible.
I'm taking her in for 1000km servicing this Saturday and I plan on telling the mechanic, but I'm wondering if anyone out there ran into this behavior before.

Does anyone know what might be the cause?  Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.

What does she idle at right after she starts?

Around 2000rpm for about 5 ~ 6 seconds right after she starts, then down to 1200rpm.

Not sure about the 796 but my 696 likes to idle a bit higher at 1300. Your mech might adjust when you bring it in.

I always use the cold start lever for the 1st start of the day, regardless of temperature. My bike stalls every time otherwise. Depending on the temp I let it warm up anywhere between 1 - 2 minutes with the enrichner thingy on, then another 30 seconds or so at normal idle.

Let the thermostat get up to 2 bars before you ride off.

The 796 has automatic choke.  I don't have a problem with starting her up.  Always starts the first time.  What concerns me is that she stalls once after a successful start.  I also warm her up for a few minutes (3 to 5) before taking off.  I'll surely bring this up with mech this weekend.

Doh! Please forgive my ignorance. Every day is a school day...

Below 4500rpm for the run-in? Is that what the manual for the 796 says to do at your mileage point? That seems a little low even for the first stage of the run-in period. As soon as you finish running it in you should probably give it a good old Italian tuneup.

sounds like the 796 has the same startup problems as the 1100.
Ungeheuer has the solution... do a search on the 1100 cold start

I have had my 796 now a for a bit, since August, no start issues, doesn't like being ridden below two bars, she hates it!! For break in, 4500 is low, the book says up to 6000RPM for the first 1000kms. I did a modified break in, first 500kms was by the book, second 500kms, took her just past 6k RPM every so often but not sustained. One thing I noticed, and this could be just me, it didn't rev too much past 6k, is there a break in restriction up to the 1000km mark?

I always jack the threads, sorry OP, yeah I would ask the dealer about the situation you are having, a lot of the bikes with the charcoal canister can be temperamental if you overfill the tank and get fuel in the canister!
