Title: im a NEWB. 2000 900ie dies out consistently
Post by: e46fanatic on October 26, 2010, 02:32:41 PM
Hey all i'm new to ducatis and motorcycles in general but i picked up a 2000 monster 900 dark edition with 4200 miles on it a couple weeks back, i drove it around the first day no problems the bike ran really nice and i really enjoyed putting around on it, i show the bike a ton of respect because i know that a 900 monster isn't probably the easiest first bike for a young kid to learn to ride on and besides stalling it about a thousand times everything went very smooth. The next day i rode it to the store about a quarter mile from my house and parked it only to find out someone had knocked over my brand new (to me) bike and just left it there gas leaking out everywhere in the parking lot, broken clip to the aftermarket clip on handlebars, broken turn signal, and dented tank. I called for help and literally with the help of a friend pushed this bike all the way home....  [bang] So i got new blinkers, got new clip ons and got everything sorted out took hours yesterday putting on the new parts and drilling holes in the clip ons for the little nipples on the inside of the throttle and other parts but now the bike won't stay on. It'll start up and i have to put on the choke about half way and i've let it warm up for atleast like 10 minutes and it'll seem to be fine once i turn off the choke initially but after that it will randomly die out on me and then it becomes very tricky to get started. Idk what i'm doing wrong, i'm sure its a really ignorance issue instead of a mechanical one so please drop some knowledge on me. Thanks
-Gage

Welcome.

This belongs in tech...you'll get better answers there.

I'll move it.

You need to give a little more info on how it's acting, which side it fell on, etc.,  but right off the bat I'd check the right hand switch wiring to make sure you've got it all together right and not pinched.  Check that the fuel line under the tank isn't kinked.  Follow the wire up from the starter to the solenoid and make sure the little white plug is secure. There is a switch on the side stand that is supposed to keep you from starting with the stand down, check that the wiring there is good.

The bar with the clutch and light toggle was the side that hit the ground. i know with cars "left and right" is a little counter intuitive so sitting on the bike the left side hit the ground...standing looking at the bike the right side hit the ground. I will look at the mentioned fuel lines and wiring for any obvious kinks or discrepancies, i mean i sort of already did that but i will again. i hope this helps you help me haha thanks for the info

and i guess i should say that it definitely "seems" like a fuel issue... but i don't see any kinks in the fuel lines

You do have plenty o' fuel, right?

yeah it seems like it i mean if i wiggle the bike back and forth you can hear gas in the tank but its not so full that you can see gas when you open the cap,  i was thinking i should probably add a like a gallon or two to see if that helps. Its weird man i can't figure it out, no wire or line seems to be pinched... if it was my car i would change the fuel filter or check the injectors or something like that but it just seems too coincidental that it was running fine and then some a-hole knocks my bike over and now its dying on me...

Add a gallon just to humor the crowd. When you turn the key do you hear the fuel pump come up to pressure?  Any splashing noise in the tank?

Not sure about the 2000 injected models, but chances are a hose came loose in the fuel pump assembly, just a guess. Add gas and see if she starts before you go that route.

I would start with adding a little gas since some came out when the bike tipped.  No more than a gallon since you don't want to be lifting a full thank.  Listen for the pump to run when you turn the key on.  Report back and we will take you further.

i got it started this morning and pampered it, let it warm up for a good amount of time letting off the choke slowly and so i rolled down my driveway and was giving it the look around just before i took off because it seems too good to be true the bike was idling fine, and the idle didn't even seem as rough as you'd expect from this kind of motor and then  [thumbsdown] it died randomly. Now it won't even turn over i'm gonna go get some gas but i'm pretty sure thats not the problem, we'll see.

By won't turn over you mean crank?  Run down battery, charge it.  Is the bike home yet?

+1

A bad battery will cause all sorts of weirdness, charge it and have it load tested.

i brought the bike straight home from the market where it went down. I had it running two days ago it just randomly died on me while it was idling and now it won't crank, it has plenty gas, the fuel pump comes on i can hear it, and its not an issue with the starter because it was starting up fine the other day i just couldn't keep it running. The battery is new, you guys think that could be a culprit?

Just for kicks, try starting it with the sidestand up

the bike doesn't start without it up, the fuel pump won't even come on without it up

So your sidestand switch seems to be working correctly.  Did you check your battery connections and test the battery?

I got her hooked up to a battery tender for now, i'll see how it goes. Thanks for helpin me with this and thanks in advance for the help i'll probably need later on haha i have relied on a forum like this to maintain, mod and learn everything i can about my car and now i'm able to actually contribute with advice and general convo  with the bit of knowledge i've picked up and know-how from diy'ing things, i hope to get on the same level with Monsters, Ducati, and motorcycles in general... just gotta get this things running now  [moto]

It's amazing how much low battery voltage can affect a fi bike.

Once you charge the battery and get it started make sure you check charging at the battery with a voltmeter.

13.5-14.5 V at about 2500-3000 rpm would be normal.

Indeed it is.  The thing is you need enough to run the computer and fuel pump as well as crank the engine.  Besides what dp said after the battery is charged get it load tested.   If you can't get it load tested  a good DYI method is crank the engine with a voltmeter across the battery.  If voltage drops below 9.6 volts while cranking you have a problem.  Could be battery, could be high resistance in the circuit.  One step at a time.
