Title: plasma tv techs out there?
Post by: Statler on June 09, 2008, 05:33:55 PM
5 year old plasma.   no burn through ever, but new strange issue.

after it's on for a bit, about half an hour from off... it starts to get green everywhere.   starts as small dots and spreads over time until you can't tell the image behind it.

different connectors don't matter...component cable, s-video, hdmi.

it's not the box as other flat screens hooked up are fine.

does it to dvd's on different input too.

sometimes you can change channel and it clears up completely, looks normal for ten minutes, and starts again.

turning off and letting it rest for a bit buys another half hour.

something overheating?

any thoughts?

It sounds like the processor isn't properly activating the pixels.  You may simply need a new digital processor or whatever they are called.  I have no idea how much that would cost.

Since it does it with everything and other TVs don't, I would definitely say it is the TV.  If a pixel went out, it would stay out for good and you would always see the green dot (this would mean the red and blue went out, leaving only the green active).  Since this isn't happening, it is most likely a processor issue.

Hopefully someone will chime in that has had the problem before.  Here lately, I've noticed on my plasma that I am getting blue dots/speckles on the very left hand edge.  It happens more with DVD's and video games though.

Did you get it from Costco?

If so take it back for a new one. [thumbsup]

sounds like your processor is taking a dump.

5 years out of a first generation plasma is pretty damn good from what I have read.

My brother used to work in a high end TV shop back in 2003 and the plasmas then were having issues. The warranty wouldn't kick in until you had like 25 pixel drops. Well, 3 week old tv's were getting pixel drops.

Might be cheaper just to buy a new one!

Could be a number of issues, Panel driver, Power supply over/under drive, I had something similar happen in a Samsung and it was a Faulty Earth strip within the panel. (Samsung are crap and there service backup is one of the worst in the Industry - just thankfull I didn't pay for it - gotta luv feebies)
Sounds like a thermal issue, so it only happens when the panel warms up, You have to weigh up if it worth the repair cost vs a new panel, The prices of panels now are amazing when you compare features/functions and picture quality, 5 years old, might be better off putting a bullet in it.

The risk with a repair of an older Plasma is you bring everything back up to spec, you have no Guarantee that something else won't give out soon after.

5 years old would equal roughly a 3rd - 4th generation panel
