Title: Gators?!
Post by: IZ on October 27, 2010, 02:23:02 PM
I was checking out a kayaking video last night from Raleigh/Durham, NC.  At the end, the camera zoomed in on something in the water.  It was a gator!!  WHAT?!  I didn't realize that they lived as far up the coast as NC and Virginia?!   :o

For all of you who live in the area, do they cause any problems?  I know when I lived in FL, I didn't even get within 20' of any bodies of water!  That was the year that 3 women were eaten.  2 seperate incidents with with them being snatched by gators as they were walking by the canals.

I've lived in the Raleigh/Durham area for almost 20 years now and I've never even heard of one being seen around here.

I moved here from south Florida and we had a neighbor that raised ducks.  Half of a duck was a pretty common sight by the canal that ran behind our houses.  And gator sightings were so common there that it wasn't even something people bothered to mention when it happened.

Its true, you don't see gaiters much any more. And by the way, what is the difference between Gaiters and Spats?

Thanks in advance.

A friend has a ranch just south of San Antonio.  He has a few gators a year show up.  He shoots em and eats em so they wont go after his trophy deer.  I have personally seen them in Corpus Christi.

All the way down in CC?!  I'm looking at the map.  I guess I wouldn't doubt they're all over the Gulf Coast area.

I just didn't realize they were north of Georgia.

Sac..  [cheeky]

Rams..  here's the clip.  They were kayaking down the Neuse River.  I'm not sure how far away from R/D area though?  I'm assuming closer to the coast.  I see there are swamps and an Alligator river up by Kitty Hawk.

Watching the video I was thinking that mostly looked like terrain closer to the coast.  The shores of the river look too flat.

Then I found this...

American Alligator in North Carolina
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

Species Distribution from known occurrences. Green counties indicate observed within 20 years. Red counties indicate observed more than 20 years.

Alligators are ornery because of their medula oblingata!

Actually, they have found Gators as far north as the Dubuque, Iowa area along the Mississippi.

I'm so happy I live in a land where there are no deadly creatures which eat and/or kill people.

You're welcome.

Neuse river empties into Pamlico sound, which is bordered on the east by the Outer Banks.
When we have a hotter than normal summer, like this year, some of the southern aquatics travel further north than usual. It's not too common with gators, but we get a lot of the offshore fish that don't usually travel this far north, Grouper, snapper, AJ's etc.

They are treated like royalty at Kiawah Island, SC.  Nothing like dropping $150 on a round of golf and having to skip a hole cause of a 10' gator soakin' up the rays on the green.  He just looked at us kind of like, "I'm a make the beast with two backsin' alligator, what U gonna do?!"  He had a good point.  I sure as hell wasn't gonna be the one telling him to move!

I was at Kiawah one spring and there was about a 6 footer sunning out behind the house we were staying in.

Of course I decided it would be a good idea to sneak up to him and hit him in the head with a stick.

I was all ready, remembered how to run to get away from a gator, my friends were all watching, etc.

Hit that make the beast with two backser square in the top of the head with the stick.  Made a loud ass clunk.

Absolutely no reaction whatsoever.

I was so disappointed.   [laugh]

That story could have gone so many ways.  Probably best that it ended in a disappointment.  Although..it would be cool if you said you hit it on the head, the gator turned around and as you started to run, you slipped in gator sh*t and it caught your leg and did the death roll on you.   [evil]

D*mn..where's that clip of the guy on the river bank?!  :-X

Damn, that was some brave, I mean stupid, I mean (lets meet in the middle and call it heroic) shit.  I think there is some outrageous fine/penalty for make the beast with two backsing with them. (other then the loss of a foot)  It would of sucked if the gator you smacked was one of the "don't feed the alligator" decoys the wildlife authorities use.  That video would have been hilarious.

A gator snatched a Basset Hound from the edge of one of the lagoons a couple of summers ago.  We didn't see it, but heard the commotion.  The old lady "walking" the dog went hysterical.  When we got over there, she was hunched over one of the "Beware of Alligators" signs, screaming for Buster to come back.

Should I feel bad for laughing about that last part?

And yeah, that would've been pretty hilarious if the gator were a decoy.  Especially because I was seriously contemplating jumping on its back and strapping its mouth closed with my belt after it didn't react to the stick.

Oh to be young and stupid again.

Nah, I laughed a little.  My wife told me that I should be ashamed of myself, but in my defense, Buster and I weren't that close.

I would probably be upset if my dog got snatched by a gator, but I probably wouldn't let my dog walk next to a body of water that had signs saying, "Beware of Alligators".
