For $10 you get 2 batteries and a separate charger shipped to your door.  Cheap insurance for the unexpected time away from a wall/car charger.

A friend of mine just got a Droid.

He said it was the coolest thing ever, except that it was also a phone and people could thus contact him at any time on it.

Just duct-tape a spare battery to the back!!

In all seriousness, download "Advanced task killer". Stops all background apps from running and will really help with battery life.

Right now what's annoying me is if I click the next page number in a thread to continue reading new posts it will load the next page and default to the bottom of the page (newest posts) and ill have to scroll all the way back up to pick up where I left off.

I picked up what you were getting at too.

And then what I was "laying down" was that at least with my phone, when the battery dies I can change the battery instead of having to stay within arm's length of an electrical outlet.

(Oh, I almost forgot this... -->  [roll] )

For the browser, I went with Dolphin.

Other apps... I deleted the stock weather widget, downloaded the weather channel app and set that up as a widget.

A notepad app.  Everybody says good things about the GDocs app.  It syncs, blah blah blah.  I didn't really like it so I downloaded AK Notepad.  Works well for me.  Try 'em out and stick with whatever works for you.

Oh, and the Borat soundboard.  That's pretty important too.

Guess I wasn't clear.  When I said "welcome to multiple batteries" I meant it as a good thing.  For example when your battery dies you can change the battery instead of having to be within arms length of an electrical outlet.

I typed that as slowly as possible!

AppBrain App Market - way better than the stock app store
Astro file manager
Chrome to Phone
Google Sky Map
Ringdroid
Springpad
LauncherPro

eventually, you will root the phone, and there will be a whole other list of must have apps...

Im more concerned how it happened. . .

i use google for email and contacts and i have about 600 contacts right now . . .

So Im on day 2.5 with this phone.  I like it, but the battery life is worse than my iphone 3g by far.

Definitely going to have to get the car dock.  That should solve the issue

some apps are a real drain on your battery. go to phone settings/about phone/battery use, and see what is using the most juice. if there are apps which are causing a drain, go into their settings and see if you can tweek how often they actively use power (network check in, etc...)

there are a lot of threads on this in the Android forums.

mostly it depends on how you use the phone, which apps are important to you, etc...

also, ever since i rooted my phone, i have gotten exceptional battery life. i attribute this to the removal of all the extra crap that i dont need/want.
Title: Re: Goodbye, iphone....
Post by: herm on October 29, 2010, 05:04:30 AM
also, with regards to your contacts...i also use gmail, and would be concerned about this. i think there are a few different ways to back your contacts up to the SD card.

the other way to do it would be to back your contacts up to your computer.

as for Froyo....i am running a custom ROM of Froyo, and it is by far the most stable OS i have used on this phone (rooted HTC Eris)

I go to click on someones text thread and it jumps to aome one elses..  any way to stop the auto refresh in the browser?  I surf a lot of forums and i hate when it does it..
Title: Re: Goodbye, iphone....

"rooting" your Android is similar to jail braking an iPhone. basically it gives you, the user, access to some of the OS that the manufacturers/carriers don't think you should be in. one example is that you can choose to delete some of the pre installed apps that A) you dont use, and B) keep trying to update themselves or check in on line, thus wasting the battery. another example (dependent on you model and OS) is the ability to tether your phone and use it as a wireless hotspot.....without paying extra for the privilage. finally, if you are brave, you can mess with the CPU....basically over clocking.

there are similarities among different models, but there is enough of a difference that its a good idea to read up on the subject before you do it. go to the link below, and look up the root discussion for your phone.

http://androidforums.com/ (http://androidforums.com/)

as for the issues after updating the software...
there is a lot of talk about how to do the updates in such a way that you get a clean install. not sure how you did it, but one line of thinking is that sitting back and letting the carrier provided OTA update your phone is a sure way to end up with issues.

again, the link above will provide you with more information than you thought you needed about your phone.

Blackdroid.net is another site work checking out. Active gps and wifi are a huge drain on the battery also.
I'm using Rock Player for vid/music playing.
Dropbox is also handy for transferring files w/o tethering.

Let's go back to the disappearing google contacts...

What causes this?

I used google with my iphone and never had a problem.

Is there something different with the DX that puts me at risk?

If I lost all my contacts id go on a murderous rampage the likes of which this world has never seen...
Title: Re: Goodbye, iphone....
Post by: herm on October 30, 2010, 12:25:23 PM
no idea why they might have gone missing, as it's never happened to me.

however, in addition to the various options for backing them up on the phone, there are two additional ways to back them up.

1) export a CSV copy of all your contacts to your computer, a thumb drive, or wherever you consider to be safe. repeat as necessary to ensure your own comfort on the subject

2) create a second gmail account, which is not linked to your Android phone. import all of your contact from your primary gmail account. repeat periodically.

on a parallel subject. be careful when you save a contact on the phone. it will ask you if you want to save the contact to "phone" or to "gmail". contacts saved to "phone" are not available on your computer.

Got a text from Verizon today, something to the effect my email changed and if I didn't do it call them. All is well, I received the email they sent that got kicked back.

Since I had them on the phone, I mentioned the contacts being deleted. Turns out Verizon is having an issue, and this has happened to more than one customer. They are working on it.

So, if you use Verizon make sure your contacts are backed up somewhere other than Gmail.

Also, don't pull your HTC Incredible out of your pocket, and catch your thumb on your pocket and basically toss it forward about 6ft. The screen will look like you hit it with a rock.

Do you need insurance on your phone Sir? " Nah, it's not necessary."  :D [bang]

i would be curious how a verizon issue could cause the loss of gmail contacts? not doubting thats what they told you.....but very much doubt that verizon employees know the difference between an ass and an elbow.

a little searching on the net leads me to the discovery that this sort of thing has been happening randomly across all smart phone brands that sync with gmail.

ok,...but its not only happening with verizon users, so how is it a verizon problem? or did they mean that it is a problem that other verizon customers are complaining about..so they are having to deal with the complaints?

in any event...sorry you lost your contacts. i can only imagine what a hassle that would be. hopefully this will help the rest of us remember to back up our important data.

So I exported all my gmail contacts from both accounts to .csv files.

I opened them up to check them out, and all the info is there, but there's nothing listed under first name, last name etc.  All the info starts in column "AM"

Does that sound right?

is it in an exel spread sheet? double click on the vertical partition between column A and B, see if that expands it.

or you could open another gmail account and import them to it, just to test the system... ;)
