Just cancelled 1 of our sirius accounts, so we will be streaming radio at home to our receiver instead of satelliting it. What do you recommend? I want low or no ads, free, and alt / indie / rock.

I was using internet radio a few years ago, so I have been in the 21st for while, just sirius was so damn easy having 2 accounts, we left 1 unit on the home stereo and 1 in our cars. Now, I need to get back into i-radio on the home stereo and looking for what is out there that is good.
I am using slacker now, and it is OK.
I tried pandora earlier tonight, and it quit playing after a few minutes. I assumed it was asking for me to creat an accnt?

If you want to save the station, then you have to create an account, but it's free.

now when I go to pandora, it prompts me to create an acct, I can't do anything else....

That's weird. Delete your cookies and see if that works.

I went ahead and created an acct. It seems pretty good so far.

Yeah, I find it very nice as I have to sit through many conference calls that I don't really pay attention to.

the first 40 hours on Pandora a month are free. Then its 99c until the end of the month. If you want no ads then I believe it is around $36.00 per annum. I cannot afford that so its free for the first week or so then a buck for the rest of the month.

Buy a wifi radio, 17,000+ stations, searchable by genre, location, etc, sure to be something out there you will like....they don't do anything a computer won't but the experience is better and different and they are now down to $100 for a cheap one. There is a great article on them at http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2007/12/radio-free-everywhere/6433/ (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2007/12/radio-free-everywhere/6433/)
The neat thing about Pandora is you select 5 different Artists you like as accounts and Pandora then plays songs by that Artist on that Account or Station which you select and other Artists that play similar style music.
So you can have 5 entirely different kinds of music represented to listen to.
Dolph :)
For "no ads, free, and alt / indie / rock" I've been listening to Radio Paradise for several years...real DJ and lot's of variety.

That might be an option. I have never looked into them. What is difference between those 10,000+ stations and stations you get using a browser and laptop?
I saw this one for 150$ that looked pretty nice:

humm.....that's weird. When we hooked up our Bluray player it allowed for us to access Pandora but made no mention of fees of any kind. We've never seen a bill/charge.
Same with the Pandora iPhone app. No fee.
pandora also now streams through Tivo.
(I dont think you need a paid account for that)
I also like the ability to select by genre (did it always do this and i didnt see it?) instead of only by artist/song as a starting point.
i pay for it as we stream it at work.
there are lots of device that are starting to support it to set-tops, internet TV's and blu-ray, stand-alone boxes and even car stereos.
think my XM is going bye-bye too
here's a free internet radio site to try- mediayou.net
lot of channels/genres
I listen to radioio at home and at work. The free version has a few irritating ads, but they are short and the music selection is huge.
You might want to check out the Logitech Squeezebox Duet.

I got one earlier this year. It's the best addition I've made to my audio system in a long time. You can play off your computer music library but I just use it for internet radio directly from the wireless router. The remote interface is great and it is an RC remote instead of IR so it can be used from anywhere in the house with no line-of-sight pointing etc.
The only disappointment is that Pandora will only stream at 128 kb (basically mp3 quality) instead of 192 kb (even if you pay for the premium Pandora upgrade) unless you do a pretty involved modification to stream through your computer and hard wire to the Squeezebox. It's too bad because the Squeezebox and Pandora seem to be made for each other - the Pandora interface on the Squeezebox is better than the the premium Pandora computer interface. Pandora needs to make the fix and they say they'll get around to it. It's not really a big deal, 128 kb still sounds pretty good to my ear.
Update -
My wife's birthday just came and went, so I got her a Myine IRA wifi radio. It was $100, so I thought it would be a good introduction to what is out there...
http://www.amazon.com/Myine-Electronics-IR001-Internet-Adaptor/dp/B001SEQSDK (http://www.amazon.com/Myine-Electronics-IR001-Internet-Adaptor/dp/B001SEQSDK)
It is awesome. I will probably give it a 4/5 starts due to the cheap remote that comes with it. The GUI on the unit is actually pretty good, it is just text, but it is similar to a browser in forward and backward, so it is easy to get around. There are no buttons on the unit, so everything has to be done with the remote. If you are a person that likes to flip stations often, this unit is probably not for you.
My first choice was a logitech squeeze touch, and it still might come some day if we find this one is lacking due to the remote - it would get demoted down to the shop stereo.

http://www.sky.fm/ (http://www.sky.fm/)
Sky FM is good for certain types of music. The Bebop and Piano Jazz stations are nice.
Another for Pandora. It's about the only app that seems to be allowed through our firewalls here and most of us listen to it daily.
I used to be a big pandora fan...well still am...it's just blocked at work. I now use accuradio. I'm not totally sure about what kind of indie/alt/rock selection it has, because I usually listen to instrumental (helps me focus). I also listen to soma.fm, if I want some downtempo chill out music. If I want my indie/classic blues/and international, I listen to a stream of my local public radio station (which does great music), KXT.org
I gotta check out radioparadise....but Pandora is still great (also never ran out of time/had to pay) [thumbsup]
Portland has 94.7/knrk and they stream live online. They also have an ipod/ipad app for it. They are pretty good with the indie/alt/rock music... but have the standard radio commercial schedule.. although they do tend to play more music than a lot of other local stations.
