So I'm sealing up my tank as the rust is pretty extensive. I've pulled the pump, level switch, and filter and am left with this conical rubber thingy ??? It seems like it was just kicking it at the bottom of the tank. What you see here is how everything looked upon removal. Is there a guru in the house?

looks like it is the bottom of the tank lock tha tprobably broake off at some point if im right it should go on teh bottom of the gas tank opening.
It's just the splash guard. It keeps fuel from splashing up to the cap when the tank is full.
It's only lightly glued into a groove on the cap holder.
Most fall off and remain left off.

It's what DP said. Take the base plate for your fuel filler and flip it over and you'll see the groove he mentioned. You'll also spot a little key for orientation.
BTW - Motowheels has replacement pick up screens. It's that metal mesh, surrounding some fibery stuff that's attached to the end of the fuel pump assembly if you want to freshen it up.

You can also clean them with soap and water and re-use.

i remember finding that rubber cone floating in my gas tank back when i had an m620. i was pretty confused...since i knew i didn't put it in there. luckily the parts schematic told me what it was, and the board (ok, TOB) told me not to worry about it.

I use mine to hold paper clips. At least that way, it's good for something.
Was mine swimming around in there by chance? I haven't seen my splash guard for years. [cheeky]
I was dumbfounded by one, two would have blown a fuse.
