Title: Cams same profile hor & ver cyl (huh???)
Post by: stopintime on October 29, 2010, 03:33:10 PM
It was just discovered that my '07 S2R 800 has a budget solution to another few parts I didn't know about...

My cams, both of them, are type 3U.
Have you heard about those cams? Same in both heads - good idea?

One of the crank's main bearings has half the number of balls.

the missing balls would cut friction...no? ;D

I'm not aware of different cams for H and V cyls.

i would like to know people's thoughts about this too. i was thinking about buying some new st2 cams and found that there's 2 different part #'s and prices.

The lobes on H and V cams are oriented differently because the drive being on the same side and the heads being reversed for intake and exhaust porting, but there aren't different grinds for H and V cams which is what i was referring to in my other post.

(Pardon the threadjack)

I would like to try ST2 cams.
Where do you intend to get 'em from?
MBP reckon they are worth 6hp on similar motors (965) they do.
I'm not sure if it's worth it or would make a difference on my stock valved, ported, stock bore, hi comp motor, with long manifolds.
If they really would give 6hp I would slap 'em in and sell the stockers.

I don't recall when the switch was, but at sometime around 2003 or so (IIRC), Ducati started stamping the camshafts the same even though they are different with regard to lobe and keyway orientation.

I just checked the parts fiche and they're different numbers.  Earlier bikes ran differing cam stampings, Ducati just did away with that.

(However, if you happen to have some F1 cylinder heads from the mid 80's and are crafty enough to score 2 horizontal 900i.e. cams and then you use the aluminum pulleys to alter the keyway orientation on the vertical head you can run a horizontal cam in there as the carb is hangin' off the arse-end of the vertical head.....)   ;D

yeah. i also considered buying a whole st2 motor for $1kish and parting the rest. that's why i was waiting for some lonely ie to come along. engine isn't a top priority at the moment.

Is that difference carb 900SS  - ST2 cams?
Any graphs?

Yeah it was between carb 900ss cams and ST2 cams. It was a footnote below a dyno graph showing a hi comp 965 motor with big valves, ST2 cams, major porting, split FCR41s on short manifolds, etc.
The claim was for 102hp and the footnote said that a similarly prepared engine with 900 carb cams made 96hp.

The site said the 900ie cams were nearly as good as the ST2 cams (which Brads cam specs supports, see Bikeboy). The ST2 cams have both more lift and duration than the 900 carb cams.

It's interesting that the sports tourer got the hottest cams of all stock 2 valvers.

Heavier bike, expects luggage and more often a passenger.   needed alittle more oomph, maybe

It also started life as a 944 which can utilize the cam better.

Yeah, that's on my to do list for next upgrade/rebuild.
944 and ST2 cams, (and maybe big valves) as DS motors are too expensive here, if you can get them.
