Title: Domain name, hosting, page?
Post by: TAftonomos on October 30, 2010, 10:36:33 PM
I'm a web page dummy....

I bought a few domain names at GD.com...had a 1$ .com promo.

I found hosting at dreamhost.com for $10 for the year, so I signed up.

I know very...VERY little about this thing.  HTML I can play with, but how to get the info there (FTP?) I'm clueless.

I'm assuming I need to link my hosting company to the domain name register company?

HELP PLEASE!

You need to tell the the co that registered the domains what the name servers are. Your host will give you that info.

Many hosts have free site building tools which make things point and click. The site will be pretty basic. You would use ftp or sftp to upload your own page design.

Some companies will give you ssh access which is faster than ftp, but I doubt you have that for $10/yr

For ftping, you can use internet explorer with the ftp address, or you can download a program like filezilla.

To get you first homepage to show up, you need a file called index.html to be uploaded - that is what the browser will look for when you enter your home address.

Ahhh...thats what they meant by ns1.dreamhost, etc.

K, got that done.

So I understand, this is telling the domain name to "look" in a certain place to load my page info....correct?

I bought a few domain names, but I want them to all go (point?) to the same place.  Do I need to change the above on all of the domain names, or just have the extra names forward to the "main" one?

Yes...pretty much.

I think you can do it either way.

There are a zillion tutorials on it.

search...point multiple domains to one site.

Cool....DH does have a bunch of software I can use, and it's now loaded up.

I still can't see anything but the default GD page....but I'm also assuming that the name server update takes more than a few seconds....?

if gd is godaddy...

it could take 24 hrs...it is never instantaneous.

Also your host may have a wait too.
