Title: Ebay clutch spring collar and a Woodcraft cover don't mix
Post by: ducatiboy on November 01, 2010, 05:44:45 PM
So I got my stainless spings and billet clutch spring collar today off ebay.

Went out to the garage to do the swap, easy peasy, took the rubber "spacer" of the rim of the clutch and reinstalled the Woodcraft cover.  Done.

It looked close but figured I had enough room... started the bike and saw metal flying out the clutch cover.  Great.   [bang]

I had forgotten about the lil grind plate that the Woodcraft cover has and the 3 button allen heads that hold it on.  I needed that rubber spacer to move it out the 16th of an inch for clearance. If i only would have left it on  [bang]  Those 3 allen heads chewed my new billet collar like it was butter.

Removed the collar and reinstalled the stock collets with the stainless springs.  Put the rubber spacer back on too.  Plenty of room.   [bang]

Could have been worse I suppose.

On another note... Has anyone had any issues with ebay stainless springs being not strong enough?

define collar. you mean spring caps (6) or single brace that ties all posts together? I've heard of those causing problems before.

Don't feel too bad; my 996 did the same thing when I transferred from a S4R.  The 996 has a non-stock Barnett clutch   pack which I think is the root of the problem.  It worked fine on the S4R even without the gasket? The the good thing is the spring cap tops are not visible with the cover on.  To fix the problem pop the brass washers from the gasket and use them as spacers.  Cant speak to Ebay springs but generally stainless springs of the same wire size and dimensions will have a slightly lower spring rate, but not enough to matter for normal hp's.

same thing happened to me. I picked up spring caps from an Street fighter and threw them on my S2R1000, they are thicker and wouldnt clear.
