Title: Helmet lock on M620?
Post by: rideserotta on November 02, 2010, 03:51:48 PM
Is there a way to lock your helmet to a 2005 Monster 620? I get tired of carrying in on quick errands.

Several wirelocks and ones you mount on the bike.

It was recently discussed here

Here's the item i mention in the thread that's linked above. You can use with the stock under seat post set up.

OnGuard Akita seat leash

The 05 Monster 620 comes with a helmet lock. Lift the seat, look for a cable that is about a foot long with a loop on the end of it. Put the cable through the helmet, or the D-ring of the helmet, then place the loop over the little metal post next to where the other end of the cable attaches, and put the seat back on. I am not even going to ask why you people were suggesting the OP buy something. It comes with the bike (of course it is possible that somebody chopped yours off as a mod "to make the bike lighter"  [laugh] , but that would just make sense now wouldn't it? Oh wait, no.)

PS: Sorry about the sarcasm.

To expand - the cable is supposed to be supplied in the tool kit. There's no telling where it might be now. There's a loop on each end.

If you don't have the .pdf owner's manual, you can download it from the Ducati website. It's easier to search than the paper manual. The manual is your friend.

To expand even further, sometimes drunk assholes cut helmets off bikes and take them, or pee in them.

I figure it's worth it never happening, so I take the helmet with me.

Yup, it took me 2 bicycle helmets to learn my lesson, I never take the chance with the moto helmet.

IMO, the cable they give you is rather useless.  Besides being too short for any thing but a helmet.  If you look through the pages here you will also find it is not too difficult to remove the seat without a key.  If I plan on locking my helmet I carry a cable with a lock that will allow me to lock my helmet, jacket and whatever else to the bike.

I agree it's not very useful. Not only is the cable a bit short and dealing with the seat a hassle, but after trying it once I concluded that I don't really have a need or desire to leave my helmet with my bike in a place where it needs to be locked.

Around here, I can just hang it from a passenger footpeg or leave it on the seat if I want to leave it outside. Nobody's going to mess with it.

I have ziptied mine to the footpeg bracket with the heavy duty ( read the type that cops handcuff you with type of grade) and it deters most...the real theives will get what they want no matter what...these are all in circumstances of prevention of the opportunistic casual thief...

Ok... so I go online and look up the OEM helmet cable. I found two part numbers for the cable. 732.1.007.1A and 732.1.004.1A. The picture are EXACTLY the same. The 007 is $25 and the 004 is $7. I guess the marketing guys raised the price when they changed the model number on the newer one (007). Or am I missing something and they are in fact different???

I think there's a mix up. The 007 is described as (also?) being for 748/916 - those cables had a metal end/eye on them and probably won't fit a Monster. The 004 looks right.

Sorry, I don't actually use the helmet lock much, only once or twice a year when I have to run into a store to pick up like one thing and don't want to carry it. Otherwise I carry it everywhere, or bend back the egdes of my locker so that it will fit inside (oops did I just admit to modding my locker?) Anyways, sorry if I came across as a jerk in that last post. Oh, and one end of my cable is bolted to the frame, I didn't know it originally came in the tool kit. I bought it from the original owner so I guess he must has bolted it on, maybe when he got the sargeant seat for it.
