the odometer counts and I have clock and oil temp, but the needles of the gauges are at zero. It's an '01 750sie I don't have a red key so I'm super apprehensive to crack open the gauges to fiddle with stuff. The bike sat for a year before I broke it down to replace the cylinder heads and it was a pile of parts for another 9 months before I hooked up a battery(today). Any suggestions as to where to start?
check the fuses

then pull the harness to the cluster and clean and dielectric grease it
The tachometer should work off one of the coils. I would check to make sure that wire is in place.

Huh? Something is wrong. If your bike is an '01 750 it is a carbie, no red key, mechanical speedometer. If it is an '02, follow Mother's advice first to see if it solves the speedometer problem. While you are at it, check all the fuses.
Report back to us with the proper description of your bike (it is either a 2001 Monster 750 or a 2002 Monster 750 IE) and any other electrical problems like dash lights not working.
update- The bike is a 750sie I thought the title said 2001 my apologies if I'm mistaken. It's definitely fuel injected and it's definitely an S. The fuses are all fine, grease on the main plug. And I even got ballsy and opened the gauges and moved the needles manually before, during, and after plugging it in and turning on the ignition. No back lights, no needle movement everything else is working accordingly.

Do the needles 'sweep' when you turn the key on?
My initial thought is an electrical/electronic failure in the gauges, though that may change depending on your answer.

ugh... I was afraid of that. Well I'll have a buddy whose circuitry savvy look at it. It's obnoxious but ima ride it anyway ftw.

Fixed, I had a friend take a look at it and he discovered there was corrosion on the board behind the plug so he desoldered it fixed a broken path cleaned it up and resoldered the plug. Success!! this was the last nit pick BS that needed fixing since I put my bike back together. Feels nice.
