Hey guys,
I thought ya'll might be able to help me troubleshoot my bike. I have put around 200 miles on it since it was serviced. 28k on my bike. The other day I was riding and when I would give over half throttle the bike would cut off. It did it a couple of times, but stopped and road fine for another 100 miles without issue.
Last week I was riding and it started up again. This time is got worse and the bike died all together. No power when I would turn the key to the dash, but you could hear the immobilizer somewhat cycling. I was on the side of the expressway for about 15 mins trying to hunt down the issue and all the sudden out of nowhere it started again. I was able to make it home, but anything over a 1/4 throttle it was wanting to die.
Went out yesterday and my bike started right up, but haven't had the time to ride it again. I am assuming I will get the same result with it dying.
Can anyone help me hunt down what the matter is? I have to take a trip to Nashville from Memphis tomorrow and would love to ride instead of taking my car. 75 for a high and not many days like that left :)
Serviced 200 miles ago? I think a trip back to where you had the bike was serviced is in order. Sounds like a fuel problem. Take the car tomorrow. These problems rarely go away on their own. I suspect you have a torn or loose fuel hose in the tank. I have no idea what you mean by hearing the immobilizer cycling. My guess is you heard the fuel pump.
I originally thought the same thing myself, but would that cause all electrical to "go off line"? I was a guessing at the sound being the immobilizer. I think your right about it being the fuel pump cycling...

I think this one is coincidental.
Check your battery connections.
Sorry for the no response here. I haven't gotten back on to the bike until yesterday. It cranked right up and road great for several hours. But the same issue started up. It wanted to die when I would give more than half throttle.
When I stopped to check things out I noticed that the relay next to the battery was buzzing. I pulled it, did a search and found out that these relays go bad often. Oddly enough they are the ignition and fuel relays :) Siemens V23073.
Strange thing was there are two side by side when I swapped them out I got nothing at all. I put them back and the same thing buzzing, along with no interaction from the dash except a small half sweep of the RPM needle...
I found this information trying to trouble shoot where to find alternative to the siemens on the old Ducati forum.
Okay for those flakey relays ignition/fuel pump I have found another alternative, this is the list I pulled from some of the posts in the tech section -
these relays should work:
Radio shack 900-2391
Seimens/Tyco V23073/V23074
Bosch 0 332 207 307
Napa AR 634
Car Quest RY 620
Borg Warner R3223
Orman 68H-UA-0070003
Mopar 56006846
I have also found in Australia that Holden (GM) have a relay for current model commodores that is identical - made by Tyco and has their pn V23074 stamped on it - the Holden part number is 92109510 and this is a standard GM number so it will be the same in the US and around the world. Less than half the price of what my local Ducati dealer wanted.

I was out in the middle of nowhere TN. Took me several auto shops to be able to find one that was listed here. I also had to let the last shop think that it was for a dodge truck in order for them to deal with me. When I said Ducati I got a cross eyed look from the first one, and motorcycle got the same reaction...
So here is my problem. I replaced the relays and I am getting the same effect as i did when I swapped the two old ones. Nothing at all. When I put the old one back in as it was same thing, a buzz coming from it and a slight 1/4 sweep of the RPM needle. BTW the MHP doesn't sweep because it has been dead for over a year now ;D
Strange eh? Any thoughts?
BTW I forgot to mention. I checked the battery cables and they were fine...
Does it happen when you're still close to home or does the engine get a chance to warm up a bit? If you have a chance, you may pull the headlight bucket off and poke around the wiring in the front of the bike. Doing my winter mods I found one loose wire (I think the neutral switch wire, or maybe the clutch switch wire) and another one that looked pretty ratty. Every once in a while my bike would not want to start and just flash the immobilizer and sometimes I could start the bike with the kickstand down and sometimes I couldn't. Mine's an 05, so if yours is about the same age or older you may have some intermittent connectivity in the wiring.
loose spark plug was one of the causes on mine when i noticed she was not purring as usual at one point.

When you say checked....does that mean you took both battery cables off at both ends, cleaned, applied a little dielectric grease and reinstalled?
Check the relevant fuses as well, occasionally they can get flakey.
I did a full check on the cables. They had a healthy amount of grease on them already. I assume me mechanic add it with the service. they were both in tact and the connections were good.
The relays I was trying were Nappa relays, and one that I picked up from O'Rileys. I went out today and bought two Borg Warners after reading a confirmation that they worked from another member. I had to drive across town to purchase two of them, not many places stock them it seems. I popped them both in and they worked! I am back on the road.
The bike also seems to idle better now. It's just in time for the warm weather that's come early here.
