Title: Open airbox mod...it seems too easy. Am I missing something?
Post by: Billyzoom on November 09, 2010, 07:20:33 PM
I'm thinking of doing the open airbox mod on my S4Rs.  the M750 I just bought has that mod and I like the sound, plus it will hopefully give me some more power I'm incapable of fully using if I get a new ECU.

I saw modified airboxes on sale on Ebay that were hacked up, but it looks like all I need to do is remove my lid, get a higher flow filter, put it in place, zip tie it securely, and leave the lid off. I removed the airbox lid and it looks idiotproof. (Famous last words).  Am I missing something?  Thanks.

Joel

nope.

if you have an exhaust it needs to be re-tuned. even bone stock it will probably run a bit lean, but not dangerously so.

power gains will be negligible. audio gain is  [thumbsup]. beware getting caught in the rain, dont do it if its going to be parked overnight in the rain.

It's as easy as it seems.  Since you are upgrading the ECU the problem of running lean should not be an issue.

I ran with open airbox and never had problems riding in the rain or even washing the bike.  I run Velocity stacks and pod filters now and still have no such problems.  I don't see how there could be any problems with the open airbox as the opening is up under the tank.  There could possibly be issues with the pods if you are in a drenching downpour or point the hose directly at them since the filters are completely open to the elements but as I said before I have never had any problems with my setup.

i think the question was "hacked up lid" vs "no lid at all". is there a difference there?

You'll want something to help apply even pressure to the perimeter of the filter - that's the job of the hacked up lid. BCM used to sell a kit that had an aluminum surround and spring clips to do this job. If you just zip tie it down, I'd be concerned that gaps would form, allowing dirty air to bypass the filter.

basically the open airboxes from ducati are just the normal airboxes with the top 1/3 of the airbox cut off, literally you can see where they took a bandsaw and basically cut the top off a normal one.  that's all it is.

the pic above is it in a sense, you don't have to do anytmie more, that part that the clips are on should be holding the lip of the air filter in the airbox, it shouldn't move.  you shouldhn't need to zip tie anythng.
