Title: Little cafe type bikes: 125 or 250cc
Post by: SacDuc on November 10, 2010, 09:41:50 PM

I'm looking for a bike that is 125 or 250cc. Nothing too rare/expensive and something that could be made into or already is cafe racer like in its styling. Year doesn't matter so long as parts aren't impossible to find.

Something like the Suzuki Stinger:

Any other models you guys can recommend?

Thanks.

Honda CB125

plenty around

plenty of bikes still produced in asia and new parts are dirt cheap

lots of parts are common across a lot of models so things are easy to find

plenty of new parts out there

eg clipons for $16

80's Suzuki gs's are dirt cheap, sub $500 machines that almost always just need a carb cleaning and new carb manifolds. Tons of suppliers, large aftermarket for the literbikes. I'll try to pull up a pic of my old 650g.

Also, the xs650s are a good platform too, and only have two cylinders, as opposed tongue bastardly 4 carb setup on the gs.

CB200 or the Ninja 250 would make a good platform based on your parameters. But if it were me I would go up a little in CCs, lots of conversions are being done to 450 motocross bikes for example. - Gene

There is a CB160 cafe racing league in Portland, OR.  I think Viciouscycle is one of the main sponsor.  Look them up o nthe internet.  You will find some sick looking racers!

How about a Benelli Fireball 50? It just so happens I have one in my garage that is longing for someone to love it again.

Saw a bunch of 125s and 250s pop up on Craig's over the last month or so, but they sell fast.

As for those CB-160/175 racers...ME LIKEY!!!! [thumbsup]

Well, you would have to pick it up from Australia.  :P

I've been offered slabs of beer to sell it, I just  [roll]

I suppose the first thing to do would be to pull it apart, clean it up, piss any bits off that don't belong, sand, sand, sand, rub, rub, rub, paint.

Suppose just should pull my thumb out of my arse and do it.  :P

That looks like a CB350. Honda made like 600,000 of those including all the lil variations so there are more parts then you know what to do with. I am in the middle of a restore of one of those. If you do a search or watch Cafe racer on Discovery gets you very motivated.

Those wee little CB's make great little knock-around cafe bikes.  My introduction to motorbikes was building this '70 CL175 up from a pile of parts:

I still contend that it's the most fun you can have with 11 horsepower.  Occasionally I kick myself for ever getting rid of it.

Stew is going to try to work a deal for us on Sunday. If he can do it Polpetta's new bike will be a '71 CB350. Sort of like this:

Hey thanks!  Too bad I have to sell it in the spring.   Wifey, says one bike only..

The CB350 twin is a good bike.  Lots of them made.  So, plenty of parts.  Also, easy to cafe, to mod and to race.   Love twins!!!   Also, lots of interchangeability between other Hondas.

Soon, very soon I am going to have a small, retro, kick start motorcycle...something I have been day dreaming about but didn't think it would happen for quite a while.

I will be going vroom vroom and laughing and being nervous about it all!

OMG I am really riding again (something I had always wanted to do but took me till I was 35 to start) I had fun with my 620 but I wanted to go down in power and get back in!

I bought myself a 250 Rebel to start. I bought myself a 620 Dark.  Now I am finding something in between and we (my husband and I) are buying this one together!

Lot's of thanks to Carl and Stu! I'm gett'n a bike!

Duck Stew found it out in Albuquerque. Actually, he originally picked up a SL350 that he was going to fix up for us, but then he came across this little beauty. He did some great negotiating and picked her up for a song. Muchas Gracias Stu!

So in the midsts of all of this early-70's Honda buying...  I've acquired a '72 Honda SL350.  It's the dirt-bike cousin of the CB with a few differences...

Stronger frame
NO electric start
Magnesium side-covers
smaller headlight

When I went to buy the CB, the guy through in an extra Honda fuel tank off of something about the same vintage.  Well, not that my checkbook can afford this, but I put that tank onto the SL frame and stripped off the extras last night...  Stu may have found a cool (& hopefully low-buck) project bike.

Only fly in the ointment (besides the $) is that I have no title for it.  Just a bill of sale...  I've got to see if the VIN is clean or not..

BTW, I wholely blame that gawd-awful TV show 'Cafe-Racer' for all of this.

Every week, I'm subjected to these cool, low-buck, low-power bikes that just...well...are cool!!!!

dammit.

I will post a detailed thread covering my progress on this motorcycle build in the near future.  Dick.

Just bought a 1976 Honda XL250 for 300 bucks.  I want to put more modern forks and rear suspension on it and put my supermoto wheels and big brake kit on it because it is going to no use just sitting.  I'm stoked to see Duck-Stews cafe build.  Pretty much anything from the Honda CB line would fit your bill, just keep your eyes open for a deal.  There is a pretty big cult following for them so parts are all over the place and you can interchange many of the parts with the larger/smaller bikes.
