Title: Removing the starter '99 750
Post by: Pedro-bot on November 14, 2010, 04:15:47 PM
Aside from the few bolts that seam to hold it in place. Is there anything I should know before removing it? Does the left engine case need to be removed?

yes...

the left cover needs to be removed as there is another screw in there.

I think you also have to remove the idler gear to find said screw.

On my 900 there is a hole cast into the gear to access that screw.

Yep, just turn it to line the hole up with the bolt.
Same for small-case motors too.

Not exactly...

At least I knew there was a bolt inside the cover...

behind the gear.

Wait....
So you're saying the left cover DOES NOT need to come off in order to remove the starter?

No one said that.

They were saying I was wrong about removing the gear.

The cover needs to come off.

Left cover DOES have to come off but the gear does not. There's a hole in the gear for you to remove the screw. Note that there is also a metal crush gasket  between the starter motor and the engine case.

I don't care about wrong or right.
I just needed clarification on my original question. Thank you.  [thumbsup]

You may carry on being infallable.  [coffee]
