Howdy folks,
I'm a brand new member, and I've been doing a lot of board reading today.
I've read many references to transporting your computers on your bikes, and I was wondering if anyone has had problems as a result.
I often want to take my comp with me, but I'm concerned about vibration damaging the internals if it's strapped to the back, and I'm also reluctant to use a back-pack because I'm afraid the small "here-and-there" bumps and knocks will cause some sort of damage.
I have a top-of-the-line MBP, and I don't want to hurt it...
I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter.
Thanks,
Eric M.
2005 S4R: ...full Zard, Lane splitters, blah-blah, etc.
...and I see a Dyno Jet Power Commander in my future... ...but really, it's plenty powerful as it is... ...had it to 130 this afternoon... ...and it didn't take long to get there...
Been riding with my laptop in a Swiss Gear bag to work and school for over two years. No probs. Just keep a trashbag in the bottom for suprise downpours.
I commute with a laptop all of the time. I use a Chrome messenger bag and a cheap padded lap top case from office max. Never had a problem.
And matmcd78 is spot on. Keep a plastic bag with you.

Your precious "top-of-the-line MBP" will be just fine. I have an incase sling backpcack and I've never had a problem commuting to and from work, nor has the MBP.

My work laptop has probably done over 20,000 miles in a backpack with a padded section, no issues. I think it gets more abuse when I travel with it.
i have my netbook in my bag with no padding, just in a pocket, pretty much all the time

I pack mine everyday and never had an issue. Big +1 on the Chrome bags. Hauls a laptop, 6 pack, and sweaty gym clothes with ease.

Figures a Mac person would worry about a few bumps hurting their "paid a ton for styling" laptop. That $250 acer closeout
surfs porn works just fine AND you'll have more money left over for farkles!

Don't you ride a Ducati? lol There's a bit of a "style premium" on that name too.
Besides... Rest assured that MacBooks have a higher failure rate than Dell. I knew a guy that worked for a computer recycling center in the Nashville area and they got tons of new Macs that had been RMA'd into the trash bin.
Laptop -> Axio hardcase -> Kriega backpack = :-)

Ha...someone had to say it. Well done!
I love all things apple, except their laptops. My experience has been one of overheating, repairs and more overheating. It reminds me of my experiences with mid-80s Chrysler products.
Kreiga r-25 does a great job of carrying either my work-provided compaq or my cursed macbook.
+11tyb on a Kriega R25. It's plenty of protection, and fits nice and snug to the rider without any straps whipping around in the wind.
The only vibration-sensitive components in a notebook computer should be disk drives, either optical or hard disks. I have a notebook with both with which I've traveled internationally a dozen times, carried on the bike, thrown into the trunk of my car, etc. Trust me - it's seen a bit of vibration. No drive problems.
If you have a SSD, you don't even have to worry about vibration killing a hard drive.
...wish I had the SSD...
Yeah, I paid a lot, but the cost was ultimately mitigated through my last year's model that did fail.
Warranty kicked in and they sent me a new unibody that was upgraded, free of charge, in every respect.
I kicked in a few bucks more and upgraded the processor further to the I-7 chip.
Since the consensus is "don't worry about it," I guess I'm going to start taking it with me when I want.
And yeah!! I'm definitely one of those who worries too much... You'll see-
Thanks to all who responded, and I forgive those who rolled their eyes at the Mac lover!
Have a Ducati day,

2005 S4R Fast as Hell and bone stock except for the usual accessories and full Zard...
Plain 'ol Northface backpack with a incase neoprene sleeve for my MBP. +1 on the trash bag for down pours... never had a problem.
