At home I can use a board or something but if I'm on the road is there another homemade device or substitute that I can stash under the seat?

Personally - I like my rubber coated dead-blow hammer as a prop as it's non-slipish. It's not uncommon to see folks use about a 1' chunk of 2x4.
For the road - you could probably track a real on down on ebay or any place that sells OEM duc parts. Local shop? While the rod may put the kind of stress on the hinge that promoted failure it isn't the rods fault entirely.The cause is as simple as two omitted small mig welds.
