Title: M-Lock, RFID ?
Post by: TAftonomos on November 15, 2010, 08:28:29 PM
Anyone used the M-lock unit?

I've also seen DIY type RFID setups.  Doesn't seem to hard to do.  RFID chip tells the rx to send a momentary signal to the relay.  I'm assuming the relay needs to be a latching type.  Then the bike functions as if the key is in the ignition, until you either swipe the chip again or use the kill switch.

Mlock is $140 something + shipping, DIY has the potential to be a lot cheaper, but probably not as clean.

Correct?

As I just posted in another thread:

The m-lock kit only provides a single-pole, single throw relay. Ideally you want a double pole, single throw relay. But it's not too hard to wire that up yourself. Still, it's not plug-and play as some soldering will be involved.

Still, I trust the motogadget stuff. Their quality is pretty impressive.

What's the range on the chip/Rx?

What happens if you swipe the chip, put it in your pocket (out of range), and then accidentally bump the kill switch at an inopportune time?
Will the relay re-latch when you put the kill switch back to 'run'?

I think the basic idea is "Chip near bike, bike on. Chip far from bike, bike off"

You walk away while your bike is running, it shuts off.

Oh yeah, and the range is only a few feet.

Someone just pointed out in another thread that the the single-pole-single throw relay will in fact work to replace the stock ignition switch, provided you bypass the switch for the lighting.

And I looked over the manual: You turn it on by swiping the chip close to the sensor, then shut it off by swiping again.

Basically if you hit the kill switch (or ride off without the key) the bike will remain on anyway.

Of course if you accidentally get the key too close to the sensor while riding, you may inadvertently shut your bike off. Still the range is only 6cm, so as long as you don't put the sensor under your seat and keep the key in your back pocket, you should be okay.

just use their STSP setup and use it to fire a relay that does emulate a DPST throw circuit.  Pretty simple.

My understanding:

The RFID chip is only a "key" that turns the ignition on.   What I don't understand is if the Mlock sends a constant 12V to the relay to keep it energized, or not.  if it keeps the relay energized, the kill switch should still stop the bike (cuts the ignition) and the start switch should still work.  Only after swiping the Mlock a second time would you remove power from the relay.

Correct?

Break key in socket in ON position.

Carry RFID portion of key in pocket,.

Problem solved.

Incorrect. The mlock (and relay) don't get wired through the kill switch, they get wired straight off the battery (and a 1 amp relay).

So hitting the kill switch isn't going to reset the m-lock.

I didn't say anything about the mlock being wired through the kill switch.

The mlock replaces the key/ignition lock/master ON/OFF.

The kill switch still functions as normal, and if I understand correct, you could hit the kill switch to shut off the bike, then flip it back and hit the starter button and restart.

Only after swiping the mlock a second time would the bike's electrical system be turned off (like it would if you remove the key).

If you have to reswipe the mlock each time you want to start the bike (like if you happened to stall it in the street)..it would be an inconvenience at worst.

Yeah, it only replaces the master on/off switch.

If the bike stalls (or you hit the kill switch) the mlock will keep powering the bike.
