Title: Shaving and hair
Post by: jammer on June 10, 2008, 08:29:21 AM
So in the spirit of the balding thread (that was a good read) I have a question.

I've shaved my head bald ever since I experienced hair loss...but only on the top.  The sides and the back grows back fairly thick and quickly.

Is there anything that I can use, eg. lotion, magical remedy, etc., to prevent the hair from coming back?

What's Nair?  Is it wax?

As for the other responses, c'mon guys, it's a serious question!   :P

No no, I shave all the head, but the sides/back grows back much faster/thicker/darker, while the top remains thin and wispy.

I've thought about laser but I was hoping for a less invasive solution.

As for Nair, the faq on the site says I can't use it for the head.....

Women use it all the time. Its ok. Just test on a patch of your head before dunking your whole noggin in it.

I'll give it a shot...do I have to let the hair grow a bit before using, or is stubble ok?

It's much better with stubble.  You put it on then wipe the hair off in a straight line.  With too much hair you end up having to like rub it off.  It still works you're just not supposed to use it like that.

Keep in mind, the stuff stinks to high hell and will probably burn a little bit.

I wonder how it works on heads.... [evil]

Just my two cents...

Nair basically burns through the hair so that when you wipe the lotion off, the hair just comes off with it.  It's actually no different than shaving except I think it gets the hair a little below the surface of your skin so you may get a few extra days before the hair grows back enough to be stubble.  I wouldn't recommend putting it on your head especially since your hair grows so fast, it won't do much for you.  I've tried using the stuff on my legs and it never really works for me.  If you really want to just be bald forever and be done with it, get it Alased.

I think you ought to try waxing it. Please video tape it when you give this method a try.  I have been
shaving my head for years and always wanted to find another way.  [popcorn]

This thread (especially certain lines in it) is really funny if you imagine it's a conversation between the store clerk (Charles 'Lew' Smith) and Evelle Snoats (William Forsythe) in Raising Arizona (where Evelle is buying diapers and balloons for Hi Jr.).

I think it's funny that you know there are people (myself included?) that you know have more experience but don't want to give out too much information. [cheeky]

I took the plunge yesterday.  I have much thicker hair on the sides than the top so I had #2 around and #3 on top.

I went to the girl who had always cut my hair to do it.  She's moving out of state so i figured now is a good of a time as any.

After doing it she said, You have a round head.
I said, Like Charlie Brown?
She laughed.   :-\

I'm not sure if I like it yet.  Maybe a bit shorter....   maybe just a bit longer on top.  We'll see.

Holy crap, you guys are full of terrible advice!  Nair or wax your head?  That's crazy talk!

So I bought a bottle of Nair yesterday.  Haven't quite got up the nerve to use it yet.

I was told that wax wouldn't work for the hair on the head because the hair is thicker there (?), and it's not like the hair in...ahem...other places.

I want to be done with shaving my head since it'll never grow back on-top, only on the sides/back.  I don't want to be the guy who's trying to cover a bald spot by combing over long strands of thin hair.   ;D

A guy I know used to use Nair(we were all bouncers so a bald head was beautiful). He said NOT to leave it on to long or it would burn you. Other than that, all I can say is the ladies loved his....er....head.

I've nair'ed "down there" for years.  Word to the wise... DO NOT GO PAST 4 MINUTES

My balls were red for a week.

How's that compare to a razor?? Seriously?

I've used the nair on my chest, it can irritate your skin, but remove a rug.

I would imagine that getting Nair in your eyes would not be a good thing.
Prolly why they say not to use it on your head.

No stubble itch.

With shaving  I get stubble irritation in a day or two... with nair I don't get that at all.

And done!   ;D

Nair'd my head today. I must say the darn thing works as advertised. A 4-days worth of stubble on my head came off with nary a hitch. For a bit afterwards, my head felt like it's been out in the sun too long...feels kinda warm.

Head's not as smooth as a freshly razor'd head, there's a minor amount of stubble left, sort of feels like fine velcro. I'm not sure if this is due to my hair being too long or too short before using Nair.

Question: if using Nair is like putting acid on your head, are there side effects from using it?  Any studies on long-term use?

This forum is great for asking questions...obscure or not!   [clap]
