Title: bike wont start, 2000 monster 900 ie
Post by: deanknight636 on November 21, 2010, 06:04:04 PM
Ok so i got a 2000 ducati monster 900 ie it was in a front end wreck 5 months back and has been sitting ever since.  Now im trying to work on it and get it back on the road but nothing is working.  When it was wrecked it would still turn over and the lights worked now i'm just getting the lights the motor wont turn over.  it fell on the left side as your sitting on it, and all the gauges are gone and the headlight.  I sent the gas tank to get welded and when i got it back yesterday is when i started trying to work on it again, but now when i turn the key the fuel pump dosnt even spin up.  The battery was dead and I charged it the other day so i'm thinking that my next step would be to buy a new battery. to make sure that's not the issue, although it does read 12v with the voltometer attached but i dunno :-[.  mmmmm oh yeah also i checked the spark plugs and they are good and do spark so i was thinking fuel issue untill i direct connected the fuel pump and checked it.... but i dunno what the psi should be and dont have a tester to test the psi but it seems pretty good.  hope i provided enough info, ask if you need somthing else.

When you say turn over do you mean it won't start, or the starter won't crank the motor?

Step # 1 is fully charge the battery and get it load tested.  If the bike has sat for 5 months without the benefit of a battery tender it is certainly on it's way to toast.  Then, if the fuel pump doesn't prime determine if the fuel pump is getting electricity.   If it is not getting electricity, check the fuel pump relay.

Voltage only tells you the state of charge.  You need amperage to turn that starter motor.  That is what the load test is about.  At that 12 volts is about 25% charge.  A fully charged battery should read at least 12.6 volts

No need to get mad: the frustration is understandable, but not impossible to work through. These guys are taking you through a systematic (logical) trouble shooting procedure. It will, of course, take a little longer through postings, but they'll get you there. The load-testing the battery will verify the battery is good (or bad) and eliminate it from the loop so you can move on to the next step.
Randomly chasing wires and wiggleing things can work (and does frequently), but a sequential procedure will be able to be used for the rest of your life: teach a person to fish...

Ok also iv been lookin around the forum and see abunch of talking about immobilizer and reflashing.  so on a 2000 900 ie that got into a wreck and had the guages destroyed am i going to have to have the ecu reflashed? it is fuel injected.

No.  A 2000 does not have an immobilizer.

Sounds like your ECU doesn`t get any juice-no fuelpump priming.
IIRC there`s a earth cable out fr ECU, could that be loose?

Did you check the fuses?  If they are good then check the fuel pump relay.

Oh yeah, ^^^   What he said
