How did it start for you?

1st of al...BUMMER. I have had hand issues for the past 12 years.  It started when I was 19, at the time I was a full time student w/ 2 cooking jobs and plying in a band.  My hands started cramping badly.  The pain moved up my arms to my elbow and then my shoulder. I have wanted to stab myself through the hand with a knife soo many times.  The cramps would get terrible and my hands would be useless in the AM.  I saw a doctor and,  went trhough physical therapy for a few months and wore a brace.  It has flared up 3-4 times since then with worse symptoms.  At this point in my life I owned a restaurant and cooked 50 plus hours a week.  The flare ups would put pressure on nerves in my hand, and if i hit the wrongs way my hand would go numbs and close up like a claw.  Physocal therapy helps. I will do whatever it takes to avoid having the surgery.  Good luck, it must sucjkto be a mechaninc and have crappy hand problems.

Sorry to hear of your ordeal.  :(

I don't have those kind of symptoms, however.

I wa out hiking/fishing and walking down a slope covered with leaves. My feet slipped out, of course, and put my hands down to break my fall. Shortly afterward the fingers on both hands started 'triggering', then locking up completely.

That was 25 years ago. I stopped using hammers on a daily basis and it, the triggering, went away. Now they cramp up and get useless making my hands look like something from a cheap horror movie.

I don't think it's carpal tunnel any more. I'm thinking Mr. Thritis.

yes I have had bi lateral carpel tunnel syndrome. It started with numbness at night.........then pain in my palms up through my thumbs. Finally I could not hold or grasp things such as a gallon of milk or even a pen. If you think you have carpel tunnel go see a doctor and get a diagnosis. It will only get worse left untreated.

I should have had it by the time I was 14 but...guess I was just lucky that way

all kidding aside my wife had it in both wrists and had day-op surgery and she has been gtg ever since...

keyboard I think was the cause and creeping numbness was the pathology from shoulders down her arms

she used to wake up in the middle of the night with dead arms...

after the operation she said she was sorry she waited so long to do it

it took no time at all for the operation very straight forward

I'll periodically suffer from my thumb, index and middle finger of my right hand going numb while riding.

At first, I thought it was my watch getting squeezed by the sleeve of my jacket.
Quit wearing my watch while riding.
Symptoms persisted, thought maybe the wrist strap on my glove was too tight.
Kept that loose.
Still get it occasionally, tends to be almost exclusively in the morning, not evening.

Hand position, arm position, how hard I'm gripping... don't seem to matter.
I'll either get it on a ride or I won't.

Have you gone to the doctor yet Speeddog?!  Sounds like the arthritis is kicking in.

my hand does the same thing. does that mean i have carpal tunnel? sometimes when im training, and i grab someone by the neck, no matter how soft and just practicing hand motions, it hurts like a SOB. like a stinging pinging pain.

The other person's neck or your hand?

Sorry, couldn't help it [evil]

On a more serious note, go see a doctor.  You are young and have a long life ahead of you.  Working hands are a good thing.

repetitive motion will cause it. If you constantly do the same thing at work and with bad posture it may cause it. After spending what seemed like a billion years driving truck I tried everything to get relief to my hands. I finally ended up with the air ride seat fairly high up and as forward as I could get it. It changed the position of my hands considerably and helped a lot.If anyone here has driven truck maybe you can relate if you have spent anytime in an old L9000 Ford . Cheapest most uncomfortable trucks ever made.......... [bang] I finally got a Volvo which was far nicer. So my advice is to change the position of your hands periodically, or arms, do less repetitive work.If you work in an office and type all day for your work change your seating position it may help.

Muay Thai clinch? Same thing used to happen to me until I figured out my hands and wrists were in the wrong position.

apparently it can be caused by repeatedly falling and breaking your wrist...who knew  :P

I spend most of my time now with just a tingling feeling in my hands...can't feel anything really. I actually haven't rode my Duc in about 3 months now, and the last time I did, it was just down the street and back. I don't feel safe riding because I can't feel the bars.

I'm looking at surgery, just not sure when  :-\

Just had this surgery last week. Previously just had injections on top and below my affected wrist. When I broke my left wrist over 10 years ago my surgeon (same one) took care of that one at that time. He recommended the right hand coz that's the most important one while riding bikes. On a mountain ride last summer my hand was just killing me and when I looked down at it I was barely gripping the bar. Looking forward to a good riding season.

Glad you could get some work done to alleviate the condition. It's great how there are medical options available.
