Title: Sac & Bacon's Excellent Adventure
Post by: SacDuc on November 27, 2010, 05:08:44 PM

When someone poses the question "Do you wanna drive 2000 miles in three days to go pick up a motorcycle?" The only possible answer is, HELL YEAH!

Details to come soon.

If you have incriminating pics or video post them here.

Yes, I'm a dork...  But, it doesn't matter because
I have a FRICKIN' 999!!!

The only problem I've noticed with the bike so far is it tends to rev up to about 8,000rpm whenever it goes under a bridge or through a tunnel. ???  Anyone else experience this?   [evil]

 ;D

Also, does anyone know how I can make the Happy Dance vid my Avatar?  I'd like to do that...  [cheeky]

Yes, coming soon...

We just drove 2,000+ miles in three days, with some riding,  [bacon] muffins, and Hendrick's Gin and St. Germaine thrown in along the way.  Not to mention Thanksgiving dinner in Phoenix.

I'm gonna take a nap   ;)

Yep. I'm laying in bed friggin exhausted right now. Here is the basic outline of the trip. I will let others fill in the silly details with more pics and video.

Basically this trip was all Duc Stew's fault. He found a Bacon Junkie a deal on a 999 that simply could not be passed up. What was originally gonna happen was that Stew was going to bring the 999 out to SoCal we he came out to pick up the chasis for his m750CR. But that would be in Dec. Ryan, the man of logic that he is, decided it would make a lot more sense to drive the 1,000 miles out to Alubuquerque to pick it up. He asked me if I wanted to go.

Um, a ridiculous and unnecessary road trip for a stupid distance on a tight time frame? Um, HELL YEAH!! But my wife's family was coming into town for Thanksgiving and would never disappoint my nieces and nephews when they want to see. But they are all crazy and couldn't get it together, so I told them to stay in Pheonix and we would come to them. In the meantime Stew found a cb350 on craigslist for my wife. Awesome!

Bacon Junkie came up to Santa Barbara Wednesday night and we had dinner with my wife, her friend and her friend's mom (who is 71 and has a huge crush on Bacon Junkie, her dad used to put her on the tank of his Ducati when she was young!). We got on the road at 7:30am Thanksgiving Day and made it out Pheonix by 3:30pm. We had TG dinner with my wife's sisters and parents and the nieces and nephew. Then we ate cookies and played with the kids all night They had a blast and so did we. We tried to get in bed at 9:00 but a thousand hugs from the kids pushed bed time back to 10:00pm. I miss those little rugrats.

We set our alarm for 3:00am (not a typo!) and were back on the road by 4:00am with a bit over 500 miles to go to get to Albuquerque. Breakfast in Flagstaff then a long drive through a whole lot of nothing brought us into ABQ at around 1:30pm. We went straight to the local Ducati Dealer to meet DucStew and Dusty and to close the deal on Bacon Junkie's 999. Has he mentioned he got a 999? Because he did. With the deal done Bacon Junkie understandably did his happy dance (see above). It was great to see Stew again and meeting Dusty was a pleasure, a beautiful and fun woman for sure. They took us to a great little Irish Pub for lunch and beer.

We road  back to Stew's shop to stow the 999  until the morning and to check out the cb350. The little honda was in great shape. It did however have the original tires. For anyone who hasn't done 50mph on 40 year old tires let me tell you that it is nerve wracking, stupid, a just a shit load of fun. I will post up more about this bike as I get it in working order (including new tires!)

After taking turns on the cb350 we went back to Stew's pad to get ready for dinner. There we met Larry who also happens to own a 900ss. He mentioned he had a few spare parts so he and I ran over to his shop before dinner. He hooked me up with some pegs, a front fender and a service manual for very reasonable prices. Bonus! Thanks Larry!

Dinner was a lot of fun. We got to meet Plumber's Crack and DucMouse and eat good food from a hibachi. Afterward Stew made me what may be the best drink I have ever had. Truly a marvel of alcoholic engineering. I'm hooked.

[THIS PORTION HAS BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT SNUGGLE BEES]

Bacon and I were asleep by 10pm. Bacon was up at 4am with the stomach problems from dinner. I slept until 6:30am because I had no such problems. This is why you drink as much alcohol with dinner as possible people. Alcohol kills germs.

Unfortunately alcohol also shreds stomach lining. I couldn't quite stomach breakfast. Or was it the asshole in the cafe that was screaming into his cell phone that was making me nauseous? After breakfast we headed over to Stew's shop. He tossed a new chain on the 999 and fabbed up a bracket to keep the temp license from rubbing the rear wheel. When DucMouse showed up on her m1000 we mounted up and headed out to Coffee at Dawn. Stew had arranged for me to ride a m900 (Stew please tell me again whose bike that was so I can properly thank him) which was fun. Stew was on the 848 Capt. America with Dusty as pillion and Ryan was on the new 999. Did he mention he got a 999? Because he did. The wonderful lady at Coffee at Dawn made a batch of her Bacon Maple Muffins just for us. They were frickin' fantastic! I'm not going to remember everybody's name, but several other DMFers met us there as well. Please post up if you were there so it can jog my memory.

We went up into the twisties for a bit, but the roads were in rough shape with a lot of water, ice and sand. Still it was beautiful. We headed back to Stew's shop, loaded up the bikes ad said our goodbyes. Our 24 hours in ABQ were up. We hit the road wishing we had more time to spend with our old friend Stew and our new friends too. 1000 miles, 17 hours and 11ty billion dick jokes later we were back in Santa Barbara, exhausted and happy.

This was the dry, no frills version of the story. And I've left out a lot simply because I'm tired. There was a lot of shenanigans and rediculousness that I will let others relay. Liquor was consumed, laws were broken, boobies were ogled and stuffed animals were sexually violated.

To all of my new New Mexican friends, when the winter becomes unbearable and you need to ride, you always have a place to stay in sunny SoCal and Bacon Junkie and I will be happy to take you on a tour through the canyons.

Thank you all so much!! I had a blast!

Welcome back boys!!

Did pretty much the same trip you guys did back in May...LA to Roswell and back in 3 days.  But mine involved cats.  Probably not as many dick jokes and very little drinking.

So how about posting the videos where we can see 'em?

Yes, yes...  I'm glad the boys made it home w/the bikes.  Bacon Junkie with his '05 999 and Sac Duc with Polpetta's '71 CB350.

We did have a blast.  Bacon Junkie got his first taste of 'superbike-dom' with a 140+ mph indicated run east bound on the I40 as he drooled in anticipation of the above pictured goodness that IS the maple-bacon muffin.

Sac Duc got to run the M900 belonging to the generous nicrosato who has bestowed its storage and maintenance upon me.  Thanks again Nic, you are a good friend.

Say, did I mention that Bacon Junkie got a 999?  'Cuz he did...  [moto]

 ;D

This was one of my more memorable roadtrips...  Besides the whole getting a 999 thing (did I mention that? Because I did!), the people, the experiences, everything was just fantastic.

I got to see my Brother from a different Mother... Duck-Stew, having turkey dinner with Sac Duc and Polpetta's nieces and nephew in Phoenix, meeting several of the NMMR Hooligans (ducmouse has some questionable video footage from her helmet cam  :o ), 2,000+ miles of delirious comments and inappropriate jokes, Maple Bacon Muffin deliciousness, flaming dinner plates, beanie hat trading, too much drinking, throttle blipping, children scaring, all around good time havin', etc... [thumbsup]

Someone did 140+, and they weren't even on a 620 Capirex!!!   ;)

Also, when we got the cb350 off of my truck at Sac Duc's house, Polpetta was just about jumping out of her skin.  :)  I wish you guys all could've seen the expression on her face the first time she kick-started that bike...

She would kick it, rev it for 15-20 seconds, then shut it off and giggle uncontrollably.
This process was repeated about 8 times in a row.  It was awesome!   8)

Thanks to everyone involved in making this such a great weekend!!!   [clap] [clap] [clap]

Congrats on the trip 9! I love mine. I'm sure the new Duc sbks are awesome but I have purposely avoided riding friends' 848/1098s or AMS demo rides. Don't even want to try one. [bang] That way I will remain faithful to my 999. ;D Just wish my neck and upper back weren't toast. Even with taller Ferracci bars my physical problems limit the distance I can ride her. But every time I do I'm always glad I have kept her. Good luck with yours! [thumbsup] [moto] [beer] Enjoy.

Yeah, that's a pretty accurate statement too!   [laugh]

I know I've got decent skills, put this bike will definitely force me to up my game.  For the first few weeks, I'll be riding her pretty easy, just getting a feel for how she handles, clutch engagement, brakes, how she handles, etc...

As Sac Duc pointed out to me, I've got premature apex-ation.   [laugh]
It's sensitive and requires a more gentle touch when laying her over in a corner.

I've got to get used to braking and turning later than I did on the Monster.

That being said, she's VERY easy to ride, pulls strong from down low, cruises with ease, 75-80 in 3rd gear all the way to work.  I clicked 4th and even though the revs were down around 4,000rpm she chugged along with no complaints.

As far as ergos go, she almost feels more upright than my Monster did.  When I put clipons onto the monster, they were below the tank and my chest rested easily.  I feel like I'm higher above the 999's tank and further forward. Still very comfortable.

Well, I'm geared up and headed home from work. I LOVE the sound this thing makes in the parking structure at work!!!  Car alarms don't like it too much, though!   [evil]

I'm off, catch you all in a bit...   [moto]

 [bacon]Junkie,

It seems you have some homework to do with sagging suspensions, dialing rear height, figuring out best tire presure combinations for street/track, figuring braking points and finger presures and figuring out that issue with the bike being stuck in 4th gear ...  ;D

Really, at times, I feel my 'baby' M620 is more than I can handle; no track days here, no formal bike riding school, so, I do feel your approach is the best ... slow & easy ... even though you made it rough with Rosie ... Helga's different ...  [moto]

Keep us updated while you keep the rubber side up ...remember, don't be a squid ... [thumbsup]

The only tranny that may have suffered damage is the clutch, first gear, and maybe reverse in my pickup.  Apparently, Carl's philosophy is, "If this piece of shit won't go into gear the first time, just push harder on the shift lever until it does!".  ;)

What [bacon] Junkie.....got a 999 :o

;) Well I haven't seen it yet  [cheeky]

If you do come up for a visit/ride.... I will be happily kick starting my bike and giggling in the drive way!

Hahaa!! I wish I had taken a picture the first time you kicked her to life... The look of absolute sheer delight and giddiness on your face was priceless!   ;D

For the record, I named the bike Sogne di Mezzanotte (Midnight Dream in Italian), or "Sonia" for short...

After I making a joke about riding it slow, and me saying she's a 999, so nein! Nein!! NEIN!!! Carl thought it would be hilarious to try and convince the entire DMF that her name was "Helga"   [roll]  ;)

It's actually quite funny that you called my bike that...   [laugh]

I'm glad you like the ergos of the 999. I did the Ferracci bars and Zero Gravity Double Bubble upgrade before the crushed neck vertebrae "thing" and really liked it. I have to have it now. Of course Heli-bars makes a nice set of taller bars too. Not much else to recommend other than watching the miles tick over on the odometer. I have stuck with the stock Michelin Pilot Powers and have been very happy. I don't do track days but I am sure they would handle it very nicely. Good street tire. [thumbsup] Hope she treats you well and you do the same for her! [moto] [clap]

Just ordered some parts for the CB.

Cafe Style Seat
New Cans
Clubman Bars
Pod Filters
Mirrors
Cables

Now I gotta find tires and grips and get oil, gaskets and assorted other bits. Gonna take me a few weeks to get her in shape but she will fit the wifey perfectly when I am done. Then I can start fabbing the aluminum bits that she wants. This is gonna be a fun bike.

/was I supposed to push in the clutch when going from reverse to first?   ???

Fastwin- Thanks for the info.  I'm leaving her as is for the most part for now.
She's already got a Termi slip-on, DP Performance mirrors, integrated turn signals, Rizoma open clutch cover, and some other stuff.

It's got a Pilot Power on the rear, and I put a new, stickier Power Pure on the front.  I really like the way the Pure feels and wears on the front...  [moto]

This is rapidly becoming NMC fodder.

How could it get more MC?  Motorcycles (witness discussion of 999s AND CB350s), bacon, muffins, roadtrips, riding motorcycles, more bacon, meeting friends, additional bacon......I mean.....how could this thread possibly go sideways?  If you want NMC, check out the OCC thread on the general....all they're talking about is cash management and loan modifications and what dirtbags the Teutuls are.  NOTHING ABOUT BIKES AT ALL!!!!!

On a serious note, shouldn't discussion of motorcyclists and their behavior (like roadtrips) be considered appropriate content?  Just askin'.

How's the SS coming along, Carl?  (there...see.....motorcycle content!)  How's Helga, er, I mean, Sonia, Ryan?  (more motorcycles)  When you gonna post up that recipe?  (no motorcycles, but bacon, so no penalty incurred).

Find the humor, oh Humorless One!   ;D

Thanks for asking Cloner. My 900SS MOTORCYCLE will hopefully be put together this weekend. Just gotta pick up a chain, axle grease and and stuff for an oil change. New shoes are mounted and front signals have arrived. I'll have to paint the fairing at some point as well, but they can always be done after I get the MOTORCYCLE in working order. I will post pictures of my MOTORCYCLE when it is complete.

It sure was nice of that lady at Coffee at Dawn to make those muffins especially for a us when we rode our MOTORCYCLES to her cafe. I mean, its little things like that that make a 2000 mile road trip to pick up two MOTORCYCLES fun and interesting. For those that don't know, Coffee at Dawn is at the the base of a twisty road that MOTORCYCLISTS frequently ride their MOTORCYCLES on. And the lady there does a really great job embracing the MOTORCYCLING COMMUNITY instead of treating us like loitering deadbeats. She even offered to give Ryan the recipe to her Bacon Muffins after she heard his screen name was Bacon Junkie on a MOTORCYCLE forum. Which was really nice of her.

By the way did Ryan mention that he got a 999 MOTORCYCLE? Because he did.  ;D

I'll see what I can find, Bick.  For reference, Coffee at Dawn is Albuquerque's version of the Rock Store, for those of you on California time, or Albuquerque's version of The Crossroads of Time for those of you near Deal's Gap (though it's not as busy as either of those venues, as there are only a couple of million folks in the entire State of New Mexico!!)

Ducati is generally well represented on a Sunday morning during riding season and there are a few dozen of us who frequent Coffee at Dawn regularly.  Among the core group of folks who hang out up there are my '95 SS/SP and MH900e, Duck Stew's 848 Hayden, DucMouse's S2R1000, Plumber's Crack's S2R800, DucDog's 1198, J.J.'s 1098S Tricolore (soon to be replaced post-wad), Zaster's S4RS and 1098S, Ratfink's 749S, GratefulDuc's Streetfighter S, and several folks who aren't members of this board including an 851, an 888, and several other Monsters.  Occasional visitors include almost any Ducati you could imagine from narrow case singles to round case twins to 1098R.

There are also TONS of other bikes that show up including a couple of Vincent Rapides, a '50s Norton Single, the occasional Parilla, several Benellis, Guzzis, early HDs, British cafe specials, /2 and later Bimmers, a VERY sexy Laverda Jota, virtually every modern Japanese model conceivable along with several vintage models.  A brisk Sunday morning might include glimpses of a couple of hundred bikes in the parking lot.

I know I've taken a few pics, but I'll have to see what I can dig out for ya.  Give me a day or two to scrounge.   [coffee]

Is  [bacon] not treating her right?

Unfortunately, I haven't been treating her the way she deserves to be treated.   :(

I've been sick in bed with Strep, and she's just sitting in the garage wishing she was doing 140mph+ in 4th gear... Not that I'd be so irresponsible as to do that...   [evil]

If I'm able to get out of bed, maybe I'll be able to take her out on Sunday...   :-\

I did drag myself down to the garage this afternoon and started her up... She liked that.   ;D

Yes, Sac got a good deal on shiny new leathers from someone here on the board.

He needs to break them in though... they seem a little, umm, snug.   ;D

Every time we go on a road trip he gets a throat infection. He also seems to spend an inordinate amount of time in the men's room at the rest stops.

Draw your own conclusions.

congrats on the new bikes!

And, I agree with someone early in this thread that said the 999 series are an icon that will be more appreciated with age!  I have always liked them, and would still put them up against the 109* series if I had to choose [thumbsup]

On our trip to 'Burqué to pick up our Motorcycles, Stu passed the Elf costume on to Sac Duc.  I still have my Rudolph costume, and Joel has the Santa thing down, so find some Elf garb and join the party!  ;)

you two up for next Sunday?

Rudolph is READY!

Carl said he's gonna try like H-E- Double Hockey Sticks to get his bike ready on time.  He really only needs to put the rear wheel and a new chain on.  Probably the fairings too...  The only thing I see a problem with is he lost the key to the bike... HIS ONLY KEY TO THE BIKE!!!  [bang]

I think one of those horses he calls dogs ate it...   [laugh]

I am starting to worry about that too, I have seriously ripped our entire house apart. Though it is small there are many places it could be???  [bang]
I pulled the mattress and box spring off the bed frame...Carl remembers it being on his night stand on his books 3 days ago. We have moved every piece of furniture. I have washed every piece of laundry (usually where I find keys, cash, and nuts and bolts)...NOTHING, not a thing  :'(
I am leaving for a business trip in the early AM but think that poop patrol may be important to this mystery  :o
Our boys haven't eaten anything other than my glasses or socks since they were really little puppies when I was packing for a business trip and decided to take a shower.....Well they could have been  [evil] because there Papa went away with their buddy Ryan two weekend in a row  ??? Well they are a little spoiled  [roll] Carl's going to try and get a new key...hope this isn't too hard.

I have two words for you, Carl....Excessive Bacon.  Or maybe it was supposed to be Quit Bacon.  Say it, Carl...."I can't quit you"...Sac and Bacon would have been a shoe-in for Brokeback Mountain 2:  Brokedown on Brokeback.

How about Toggle Switch.  Nobody would steal a Supersport, would they?  Where are you parking it, again?   [evil]
