Title: Removing spray paint from belt covers.
Post by: VeryMetal on November 30, 2010, 09:03:36 AM
Don't shoot! It wasn't me who sprayed them!! I have a set of belt covers that have been rattle canned and (as you may guess) the job isn't top notch.

Just wondering if someone could recommend the best way to remove the paint without damaging the plastic/ nylon or whatever the covers are made from.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Using 000 gauge steel wool, rough up the surface. Then use Duplicolor Prep Spray (any Advance Auto or Autozone carries it) to clean the surface. Shoot a coat of Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter to aid in making it stick, and then a coat or three of Duplicolor Trim Paint (black, the can is green) to finish it off. Looks like OEM black plastic, and has lasted three years now on my VW Golf without fading or chipping.

If you need to remove the old paint because of flaking/peeling gasoline will do it. Just wipe the covers dry so they're not wet too long and possibly swell.

The paint isn't flaking or peeling, it's just too thick in some areas, you can see where it has been applied too heavily and has run. I'd like to just restore them back to the original grey plastic. If not I guess I can sand them flat and follow Artful's suggestion. Thanks guys!!

No sweat. I forgot they also came in gray (mine were black). Duplicolor also makes a gray bumper paint that works great if you decide to go that route.

Thanks, man. I definitely appreciate the input!  [bacon]
