Title: Hard starting issue solved
Post by: markg on December 07, 2010, 06:07:51 PM
Hello all - been meaning to post this for some time. I have a 2009 M1100, and was having a horrible time with a hard cold start issue since the day I bought my bike off the floor. After a couple of trips to my local dealer I was pretty fed up, so I took it back to them and asked them to solve it. The first couple if trips they reset the throttle position sensor, but that didn't solve the problem. They had to contact Ducati to go beyond the normal check stuff, but after looking and looking they finally found the problem. Seems that apparently during the build the factory sprays paint on screws when they set them to indicate they've been set. Some of this spray got into the idle mixture port. May have been named something else, but I'm not a ducati tech so apologies for improper terminology. Hopefully you get my drift. Once the techs found it and cleaned it out, my bike starts every time now and runs great, cold or hot.

Don't know if anyone else has had this issue, but it made me really enjoy my bike that much more. Having to crank and crank for a cold start was really getting old.

Hope this helps someone. Take care all.

Air bleed maybe?  There seem to be a few people having the same problem.

Can you please find out which port on which part, specifically, was cleaned out?

Was it a port on the Idle Air Controller (stepper motor)?  Or one of the ports it connects to?

interesting read mate.

I have the same bike same year and i had it run terrible at the start to the point i called the dealer and said 'HEY COME AND GET THIS NOW!' .. by the time I got it back around 2 days later they said they didn't do anything rather than reset TPS but it has been fine ever since....so makes you wonder!

Though like most people found on the forums the more KM's on the bike the better it ran and felt. I also put on the Ducati Performance Termi slip-on kit with Racing ECU which helped again.

Ahh just missed the crucial point being fuel, most stations I used made it run like crap but BP Ultimate the bike just loves and loves....

I checked the service sheet. The note from the Tech said "Blue paint found on Idle Air Bypass Screw - Cleaned" . Ever since then its started without a hitch and run like a top. Hope this helps someone out there. It was hugely frustrating until it was fixed. The service guy said that they can only do a limited amount of work - checking certain things - on a warranty service. After that they have to get approval from Ducati to do more. I had to wait a few days for approval, but after that the tech found the problem, cleaned it, and it was a great relief.

It was really frustrating to pay that much for a bike and have it be a pain to start. Even more frustrating was repeated responses of "Well, they're all that way." I didn't want to accept a problem with a basic function like starting as a normal problem, and in fact it wasn't.

Take care all - be safe, and happy riding.

Mark from Austin.
