Title: F22 - Farnborough International Airshow 2010
Post by: Monster Dave on December 07, 2010, 06:38:30 PM
My grandfather sent this linked vid to me of the F22 from it's first European air show. If you've never seen the Raptor in action or you just can't get enough of it, you've got to check out this video.

http://www.militarytimes.com/multimedia/video/index_da.swf?fa=armytimes&wa=armytimes&wd=575&ht=324&cp=21772&bw=&state=vid&em=false&fn=/flv/20080714_rc_f22 (http://www.militarytimes.com/multimedia/video/index_da.swf?fa=armytimes&wa=armytimes&wd=575&ht=324&cp=21772&bw=&state=vid&em=false&fn=/flv/20080714_rc_f22)

It's weird but, I have to admit that watching the sheer awesomeness of the F22 make me laugh - it's just so badass that it's unbelievable.

Wow.

Saw one of these at the Nellis Air Base in Vegas about a month ago.  Unbelievable performance.  On one of the passes the pilot pulled what appeared to be a near perfect 90 degree turn.  Almost like he stopped, then turned, then took off.  Crazy cool!

It's so cool that it's barely trying there, the technical capability of the stuff that isn't classified about the raptor is amazing cant how cool the crap is that we dont know.

The capabilities of the F22 are really insane when you think of how far ahead of the curve it is from other "contenders".

I like how the video narrator highlights that there is a "speed limit" for air shows so as to not damage peoples hearing and of course to protect the automobiles in the parking areas. I love to see one race by a full speed and shatter a parking lot full of car windows.  [evil]

^speaking of that, my buddy lives out in eastern Washington and regularly has jets break his front window from low
high speed passes. He calls the Navy a couple times a year for a replacement. We were outside one time when one of the jets made a pass and I thought it was going to knock us off our feet. You heard it coming and by the time you figured
out from which direction it had already passed. it was pretty freaking cool.

That's pretty wild. I bet the Navy doesn't even question the replacements.  [laugh]

We have 15's flying around here. That jet makes the 15's look second rate.

Living in Arizona gives us a chance to see a lot of military hardware flying around. There are 2 big bases here one in Phoenix where the F-16's are stationed and one in Tucson where the A-10's reside. The big coup that's brewing is that since the F-35 is set to replace both of these planes that these local bases will get a bunch of the new jets when then are put into service.

I'm looking forward to seeing them in the air daily as we do the others!! The F-35 is not as sexy as the F-22, but it's still awesome.  [thumbsup]

Oh wow wasn't aware the 35 was replacing the a-10, a-10's and f-16's are 2 of my fav planes. F-35 may be cool but I'd still have to say that the A-10 is cooler than the F-35, how can you beat a 20 foot flying gun? Can the jsf really replace the low speed giant gun tank killing ability of the warthog?

Yes. It will be a sad day when they retire the A-10.

The Air Guard unit across the runway still has 16's.  Fun to watch.  [thumbsup]

There is nothing cooler from a fixed wing than watching an A-10 live fire.

WOW! I never realized that the A-10s gun was so freak'n huge. They must have built the airframe round the gun!!!

I love military aircraft. As a kid I have many fond memories of visiting Wright Pat AFB. The A-10 has always been one of my top 10 favorite aircraft.

My favorite plane by far though is the B-1 Bomber. Fast, sleek, and very sexy in the air.

The A-10 was in fact designed around the GAU-8.  Take a good look at the aircraft from the front if you can.  You'll see that the nose gear is offset to the side to maintain the bore's alignment to the center of the airframe.  It was designed that way to aid the pilot's ability to "point and shoot".

And I don't imagine it being replaced by the JSF any time soon; not at least while we have places like Afghanistan going on.  Don't forget, the lawn dart was supposed to replace the A-10 in the CIAS role back in the day...   [roll]

You should hear it when it rips through a burst down in the valleys.   :o :o

Awesome!!

The gun actually produces more "thrust" than both engines are capable of when the throttles are at the stops.  In essence, if the hopper held enough rounds, the pilot could cause the plane to stall by doing a sustained burst.

I think that like the BUFF (B-52), the A-10 will still be flying for a long time. Nothing else does it's job as well as it does.

According to the military the drawdown of the A-10 is expected to begin in the early 2020s when the F-35 comes online in sufficient numbers. The last A-10 is scheduled for retirement in 2028.

Maybe I have a different perspective after have worked on the F-16, B-1, B-52 and the A-10 (WEAPONS for life!!!) but my favorite is the F-16.

Although I must admit seeing the GAU-8 fire is a whole lot better than working on it...

I always imagined working on those things would be a pain in the ass, Do you have to remove the entire thing to work on parts of it?

my two fav modern military planes are the A-10 and C-130 both of which never get enough love for how cool they are.

Depends on what has to be done...

Scheduled lube - no
Scheduled inspection, time changes, malfunctions - yes

Although not that bad to remove/install if the right people are doing it...

I've had a variety of weapons systems employed around me, and by far the coolest and most intimidating sound I've ever heard on a two way range was an A-10 doing a gun run close by, those things are incredible. They make rockets seem like firecrackers. [bow_down]
