Probably not the kind of trouble you're thinking about.  There are a bunch of SDs tearing it up down under, I'm sure you can talk yourself into a test ride.

Hey guys,

I've tried the KTM 690SMC not too long ago, it's friends bike and he let me take her out for a spin. All I can say is it's probably the easiest bike to ride, you can get away with soooo much and it won't bite you if you're not the most precise rider.

It was an absolute riot on twisty asphalt. I thought the modest power output may reign in the fun but was I wrong. The front end will pop up with the slightest provocation and it makes you feel awesome, it really flatters your riding.

Pros:
Doesn't vibrate (compared to other mono engines)
Fantastic brakes
Enough power for a LOT of fun
Very light
Beautiful exhaust bark with a Akra can and fuel remapping
Slipper clutch is exemplary

Cons:
I'm broke
Tank range isn't too good

I didn't use a whole tank by any means however he said 150km is about average before he refills. When the lease is up on my F800R I will look into getting one.  ;D

Heck, I've even put up my trackbike for sale accepting a KTM SM as part exchange.

I really want one  [drool]

Yikes.  My 950 SM gets ~35 around town and 45 steady throttle.  200+ from a tank.

The R's have a smaller tank, and usually a more stoopider operator.   ;D

I get something around 145 miles to the tank on the SD if ridden easily.  But give that throttle a good twist coming out of every corner, and we're looking at around 110.

You gots the bigger tank...

Mine only holds like 3 gallons. I get 2.xx in there when filling up on the gas light.

I get 40 on the open road even with lots of throttle.

Less if I hammer it in the tight stuff (32)

I don't think the yami is going to be unexciting.  It's just too bad it's 60 something pounds heavier than the KTM... :(

When I finally buy a touring/ADV bike I'm looking for reliability.  Of course, I've never had an issue with my 525exc and I beat the crap out of it!

I keep popping back and forth between the MTS1200, the GS BM, and the ADV.  can't figure out which one would be better for me!

Title: Re: KTM 690 Enduro
Post by: Monsterlover on December 18, 2010, 10:16:28 AM
Well, the adv would have chain/gear driven cams

The lc8 engines don't need much. I pounded mine for 9000 miles before I even looked at the valves. They were all ok :D

True, the Tenere is a bit on the porky side for what it is..... Still like it though.... But if I'm honest I desire the KTM more....

Its this that keeps me coming back to the Yamaha......

Resurrection - but since this is about the KTM 690 Enduro... no need for a new thread.

Buddy sent me a listing for a nice looking 2008. Well it seems nice but I don't know so much about the orange. So if anyone's more educated, please illuminate me.

The listing:

"2008 KTM 690 Enduro - $6800- with Renazco seat $6500- without Renazco seat

9129 Miles

Accessories:
Renazco Seat
Leo Vince pipe w/akro map
KTM Twins fuel filler setup
KTM Tail bag w/bracket
Small KTM tool bag for dual sports etc.
Underground machine risers w/scotts damper adaptor (I am using the damper on another bike)
Enduro Engineering hand guards
KTM Foam filter (Also including the stock paper filter)
Dunlop D606 front & D908 Rear tires with plenty of tread left
Radiator guards
Sicass Racing LED rear signals
Flat Land engine guard / bash plate
Touratech; Kick stand foot, rear brake guard, and rear rotor guard
14 tooth counter sprocket (and stock 15)
KTM sport windshield

Also comes with:
Fully bound shop manual
2 sets of extra oil filters
1 new spark plug
Original "brief case" and all manuals
Under seat gas tank I bought on a whim, but never installed
Extra new fuel pump, another item I bought on a whim because it was a deal
Extra Teraflex rear tire with low mileage

I also have a set of supermoto wheels & tires that transform this bike into a road burner for an extra $500- (the bike is really fun with these on the road!) takes about 45 mins to put them on, 20 mins to change back.......I have the cut fork protectors & everything for them. Tires have 90% tread left."

Resurrection - but since this is about the KTM 690 Enduro... no need for a new thread.
Do get it with the Renazco seat, your rear end will thank you! [laugh]

There's a lot of good material to read on ADVRider's Thumper (http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15) section. There's also the Orange Crush (http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34) section for KTM Twins and Parallel Universe (http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=77) for BMW Twins. Depending on what you want to do with the bike a single might be better than a twin (more power, but heavier)... And last but not least, the Classifieds (http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=52) section will give you an idea of what price bikes tend to go for.

The good thing about KTM bikes is that they tend to come out of the factory already properly setup, especially when it comes to the suspension. The main negative is that they tend to be more maintenance intensive compared to the equivalent Japanese bikes.

I have a 2006 BMW F650 GS (single cylinder) that I've been enjoying. It's more touristic and street oriented than the KTM (comfortable seat, ABS, windscreen and smaller 19" front wheel), and near perfect for commuting in DC. [laugh]  I also have fun on dirt/gravel roads but it's not as good off road as the KTM (I would need better forks, a 21" front wheel and at least 50/50 on/off road tires).

I don't know if the SuMo tires/wheels are worth it. I'm pretty happy with my Metzler Tourance (90/10 on/off road tires), and could only push further with better (firmer) suspension, so fitting SuMo tires would only emphasize these limits.

Price wise, it's really up to you. For what it's worth, I got my GS for $4500
 - similar bike in Arkansas for 6K http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=740580 (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=740580)
 - BMW F650 GS (TWIN) 6K in NC http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=744825 (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=744825)

And you can also look at a Suzuki DR650, DRZ400, Kawasaki KLR 650, Honda X-whatever, Husqvarna, etc....

I'm still dipping my toe and trying to figure out what's what. This might be more pipe dream than anything... but what the hell, electrons are cheap.

Needs:
Road capable - pref pretty good on the roads. I don't, at present, have the capability to transport a pure offroader, nor do I see myself going all dirt. I'd like something I could potentially ride to some fire roads etc explore a bit and ride home. Have fun knock around SuMo a bit in the twists.

To that end I could see a road legal SuMo as a viable option.

Wants:
Durable. It's assumed that bikes like this will be able to take a hit - but are any known to be stronger in this field than others?
Lighter - I just don't feel like wrasslin' a pig. I hear the Hondas are a bit beefy...

I love my SMC 625 although I probably will get some more off road specific tires for when I do the hard core trails. It will do them now but it's not pleased with the idea.
With the 690 they added a much needed counter balancer I believe so my one minor complaint with mine would be addressed.
My tank range kinda sucks but the silly grin this thing evokes after traversing roads that are truly in terrible shape or are just a step above being a trail at insane velocities more than makes up for it.  [thumbsup]

Did the 625 have a bit of the HD wobble?

Taht one I posted has a set of 17" rims for road. What's dropping the from wheel size going to do in terms of the feel? I know the implications on the geometry - just trying to get a qualitative description from someone who might have played that swapping game.

I get a little head shake at 80 mph that clears up around 90.
I only have the 17"s so I can't compare what another size would feel like in comparison
On pavement the thing feels extremely capable, dirt roads and mild trails it's great too. I'm currently running the Pirelli MT 60Rs.
I love that it can hit a pothole midcorner and not care.  [cheeky]

Gone down a few dirt/gravel roads with my Monster and all it needed was more suspension travel and a less squrrelly front end! [laugh] [evil]

A 19" front could take care of that for you, more DS tire choices and better sizes (100/90 vs 120/70), wider steering angle. With a 90/10 DS tire you loose very little grip on tarmac but it handles much better off road than a street tire. The only reason to go with a 17" front is if you want a proper sumo setup...

There are some roads around here that are literally trails
One I wandered onto by mistake with the Monster had me dropping into first gear with my feet occasionally down and crawling up and over the mountain, too stubborn to turn back
That was the first place i went to when I got the KTM.
Whole different story, I blasted up and over that pregnant dog 40-50 mph  [laugh]

Still plan on getting a 2nd set of rims and tires for pure hard core off roading though, these tires while great on pavement and a dirt road are worthless in mud

Still plan on getting a 2nd set of rims and tires for pure hard core off roading though, these tires while great on pavement and a dirt road are worthless in mud
Same thing with my Tourance and pretty much any other DS tire. I've laid down my GS twice now and both times it was in the mud, tho the first time I was just set on attacking old logs on the side of the road...  [laugh]

I plan to try the Heidenau K60 for my next set of tires, they seem to be better in the dirt without loosing much grip/wear on road... we'll see.

@Ian if you're comparing bikes, keep in mind one plus for the F650 GS is the mileage it gets: 60+ MPG And that's pretty much wherever I'm going. [thumbsup]

Resurrection - but since this is about the KTM 690 Enduro... no need for a new thread.

Buddy sent me a listing for a nice looking 2008. Well it seems nice but I don't know so much about the orange. So if anyone's more educated, please illuminate me.

The listing:

"2008 KTM 690 Enduro - $6800- with Renazco seat $6500- without Renazco seat

9129 Miles

Accessories:
Renazco Seat
Leo Vince pipe w/akro map
KTM Twins fuel filler setup
KTM Tail bag w/bracket
Small KTM tool bag for dual sports etc.
Underground machine risers w/scotts damper adaptor (I am using the damper on another bike)
Enduro Engineering hand guards
KTM Foam filter (Also including the stock paper filter)
Dunlop D606 front & D908 Rear tires with plenty of tread left
Radiator guards
Sicass Racing LED rear signals
Flat Land engine guard / bash plate
Touratech; Kick stand foot, rear brake guard, and rear rotor guard
14 tooth counter sprocket (and stock 15)
KTM sport windshield

Also comes with:
Fully bound shop manual
2 sets of extra oil filters
1 new spark plug
Original "brief case" and all manuals
Under seat gas tank I bought on a whim, but never installed
Extra new fuel pump, another item I bought on a whim because it was a deal
Extra Teraflex rear tire with low mileage

I also have a set of supermoto wheels & tires that transform this bike into a road burner for an extra $500- (the bike is really fun with these on the road!) takes about 45 mins to put them on, 20 mins to change back.......I have the cut fork protectors & everything for them. Tires have 90% tread left."

Not much time to type but GET THIS BIKE!

PM Dan The Man. He rode the street version of the 690 E 15000 miles around the US and canada with zero issues.

They're solid, reliable and fun bikes!

Get It

A 690 Enduro might be my next bike as I don't have anything to go trailriding on and I want something I can ride to the trails, good fireroader or throw some soft bags on it and go anywhere.

A 530EXC or the new 500EXC are also being considered, they would do a lot better on the trails obviously. not as good anywhere else

You all are a bad influence...

I got in touch with the seller and it's still around. Not that I have any ability to do anything about it for the rest of the year. So I'll just have to see if it's fate or not.

Another bike that you might consider is the Husqvarna TE610/630.  Its very similar, probably a few hp down compared to the KTM, also probably a bit easier to work on.  I wish I'd seen that you wanted a big euro DS as MFI had a TE610 with 600 (not a typo) miles for $3,500 - Pilette call to give me first dibs, knowing it was a steal of a deal.  After I passed on it it sold within ~ hour of being posted online.

If you want a cheap and slow dual sport I'd sell my DR so as to have one less bike to move to FL (I don't ride it much now that I've got the Buell and XR)
Here's an old pic, but it hasn't changed.  I might keep the topcase, but could be talked out of it

Regarding maintenance -

I think these bikes are easy to work on.

My 450 exc is cake to pull the carb or check valves.

I helped Dan The Man do a valve check on his 690 and I think we had the valve cover off within a few minutes and the valves checked within another few minutes.

Yeah they aren't bad, its just a little easier to get to most things on the 610 with its backbone rather than trellis frame.

I've yet to do anything with mine including washing it, so this makes me happy to hear as I might actually start looking it over with riding for the most part done now.

FWIW the origional LC4 (most recently designated 620/625/640) is 100% different from an RFS which is again 100% different from a 690.

There's a guy around here on a 450 or 530 exc with 30 or 40 thousand miles on it :o

Quite a few 950 sm/smr guys on adv rider with 30-40 thousand miles.

Yeah, it's sold.

As far as I'm aware no one has worn out a well-maintained 690 yet.  The RFS/XC4 and LC8 are totally, completely different engines from the 690 and built for different purposes so RFS, XC4 and LC8-related stuff is not really any more relevant to the 690 than is how well your Monster lasts.

Seems that the SMC are really just made to be road burners. Though they share a lot with the Enduro they aren't the exact same bike delivered with different tires. If I'm holding to the delusions of some off the tarmac work, looks like the Enduro is the way to go.

Though I do like me some SuMo

Yeah suspension and brakes at the very least are quite different.  Ring up MFI if you are serious about one, they may be able to get you a new one for what some of these folks are asking used.

Bah, my SMC does fine off road
Santa is bringing a GoPro so I'll prove it once I get it and I get a day that is decent enough to bring it on a trail that doesn't have feet of snow on it by then
That big front brake is really friggen touchy though, I just stay away from it totally on the dirt.

After a bit of research... yeah the asking prices are high. The SMC RETAIL KBB is about $6k, trade is just a bit more than $4k. There's some nice bits and extras - but a grand over KBB retail is a bit unrealistic for a personal sale....  But it is local to me

The Enduro is a bit more on point, but still high. We'll see. Gotta a couple weeks of down time before I could do anything anyway.

Any notions of the maintenance schedules on these orange devils?
It really depends on the model. In general I think the RFS (racing four stroke) engines are the most maintenance intensive, so I would avoid them unless you want a race bike to trailer around. Other bikes had some teething issues that were later solved E.G. water pump on the 950 and some others.

I think the only real horror stories come from bikes that had a specific issue that wasn't dealt with properly. But I see plenty of people on advrider.com with high mileage KTMs that just keep riding the piss out of them. Once you pass the 50k miles mark you'll want to pay more attention to symptoms your bike might show, and an engine rebuild *might* not be far away. This is really important if you plan on a long trip to the middle of nowhere, far away from civilization. Not a such a big deal for weekend rides.

Maintenance is pretty relaxed on the 690, not to worry there. I know on the duke 690 (same engine) the owner's manual says oil changes every 5k km, valves every 10k km.  I think the enduro will say 600 miles for oil changes, but that's to account for folks who use them for 100% hard off road, for casual dual sport and street riding I'd think something closer to the duke schedule would make more sense.

That's pretty much what my lc8 calls for. I just do an oil change in the spring. I never even looked at valves until I hit 8500 (bought the bike with 500 on it)  they were all good. I wont think about them again till 20k.

you are missing the joke...you are rather anal retentive about making sure your bike is almost clean enough to eat off of at times(or so it seems by how your bike looks when people see it), so the idea of you having a "dirt" bike that is actually dirty perplexes those that know you and your Monster...

So besides the wheels and front brakes - anyone know what the differences are between the SMC and Enduro models are? Mostly the same as far as i can tell, with the Enduro sporting bigger wheels and a less agressive front brake, 300mm and axial caliper vs the 320mm and radial caliper & 17" wheels of the SMC.

Any thoughts on the 2010s?

Seems like the EXCs are a bit more on the race side. Manual calls for oil changes at 15 hours... and I thought those SVX apes were needy. But it does have some nice bits to start off and not worry my wallet so much

Now it seems there's a horse race developing. There's an 09 690 SMC in the mix and an 07 525 EXC. The SMC is bone stock and a bit less than the others, but would need to be shipped.

The 525 is $5500 and here's the deets

'So the bike, it is a very low hour 2007 525 with the complete dirt setup and the supermoto setup, I have both fenders, the KTM briefcase and documentation, the KTM SM catchcan, all the fuel vapor setup (this has been removed), I have it all.

Starting at the front of the bike I put the Cycra Pro Bend handguards and shields on, I installed a Scotts setup on the bike to include a new top clamp and post. I have the stock tank and then a IMS tank (have to check on the exact size) that can be used for extended mileage. Only thing about this tank is there is a bolt frozen in the tank, it is one of the bolts used to secure the shroud, not a big deal but it pisses me off. I am not sure how to fix this. I installed a Works Performance skid plate and have the stock one in a box. I installed a Hammerhead shifter, also I bought a Enduro Engineering comfort seat and installed it, of course I have the original seat. I also have a reservation with Recazno (coming up quick) for them to build me one of their seats. I just put new Bridgestone Battlax BT-003 racing street tires on the SM setup, they have less then 150 miles on them, these are super sticky tires that I am loving. Running the 150 on the rear causes the chain to touch the side edge of the rear tire, this is not a big deal once the chain makes it path into the edge just something I wanted to mention. There is a FMF exhaust system on the bike that is wonderful, I also installed the heat shield that you can see in the picture to prevent damage to your gear."

Hrm...

You're correct the LC4 is a not as tweakish as the plants in the EXCs. They aren't terrible, but they want the oil changed a lot. But on the 530, it's only 600ml, yes 600 ml that you're changing  out often for the engine. They have a separate oil bath for the tranny.

Looking 690... at least I sure hope so. There's an Enduro on ADV that's for sale and I hope I get it. It's one of those 'I'd do those mods' sorta bikes.

of course the seller seems to be a busy dude and hasn't been back on to check his PMs since the morning! Killin' me

Lars you talking to me or Knight?

If me, I did. There was a 950 super for sale in dc a couple weeks back. But I decided if I was going to get something that beefy it'd need to be like the SMT or something a bit more down the Multi 1200 line.

One of my objectives was get lighter and have some dirt capability

Post by: DRKWNG on February 02, 2012, 05:30:01 PM
For the record, the 950 Super Moto will do dirt just fine once you swap wheels on it.  After all, it's pretty much the same bike as the SE, just with 17" wheels.

Ian,
Was just thinking that a 950/990 would be easier on the license than a 690.

I know that if I were to own a 690 , loss of license and jailtime would follow.

Ironic that the 'little one' is the bad guy of the bunch. At first I was like 'What's Lars smoking?' Then I pondered it. If I'd gotten something like that 530 I'm sure I'd have been tempted to take it up on all sorts of areas and objects that John Law might find objections to. But the big supers, not so much... yeah I'll have to watch the naugty factor.

- Part of the notion of doing some dirt is to 'explore' a bit where prying eyes might not be looking

it arrived and it's not pink! No photos yet at it arrived at 9:xx last night and I only got to ride it to the end of the block, back and up the drive.

But jebus is it tall... Even with the 17s it's up there. Putting on the 21/18 set will be interesting...

Got some farkels on the way! And just ordered the shorter side stand from the SMC as it stands almost bolt upright using the Enduro side-stand with 17s.

Oh boy!

Not bad - It'll take some adjustment figuring it out though. Don't really want to mash the throttle when I'm already at nearly 45 degrees on that first section. Method so far's been a bit more gas, with a bit of clutch slip. Sure as shit don't want to stall there.

or just carry more speed before hitting the easement and roll up with ease, and if you are a lil too fast, you certainly have the brake power to stop !!!

Got the rather icky brake fluid(s) changed out, tensioned the chain, installed radiator guards (deal with resulting smoke from spilled coolant), gave it an over all check and took it out for it's frist spin!  [Dolph]

It'll take some getting used to, but I like it. Nimble little bugger!

Do wish I'd been able to get an R.. the orange frame is hot. But mine came with a full SuMo setup, SMC wheels w/ sprockets and cush drives, monoblock caliper, 2nd master, 320mm rotor. So it's not a bad trade for some orange.

Another good resource I've found is supermotojunkie.com. Obviously dedicated to SuMo but as the 690 SMC and Enduro are mostly the same it's handy. And a number of folks cross conver the E with 17" wheels.

So my fellow villains - any feelings on springs? At just shy of 200 I bet I'm under sprung.

Won't claim that I couldn't shed a few pounds, but I'm near 6' and have a 32" waist. I'm not fluffy just go some muscles. If I dropped to 6% I'd still be in a mid/upper 180s. Why's the header clean? The bike's all mud spattered, but the header is all shiny

And no - I just got the ability to swap wheels this weekend - maybe this coming weekend I'll get some play time. Been work work working... lots of house stuff (fun fun) and going through the bike. Since it came home I:
Changed the oil,
installed some billet bling (filter covers and filler) that I got off ebay,
flushed the brakes. Fluids looked more like good Scotch than bad beer.
Installed radiator crash guards
Bought and installed the side stand from the SMC. With 17" wheels and the E stand the bike stands almost straight up.
Removed the stock mirror and fitted up a bar end clamped inside the switches
Fit Acerbis SuMo hand guards.
Pulled spark arrestor baffle
Checked all suspension settings
Adjusted rear brake settings/position.
Wondered what the hell has happened to my order for axle sliders.
