So I want to race a different class in 2012. and i'm trying to figure out if i want to simply put a newer 800 or 900 aircooled engine in my 05 620 or buy another bike and start fresh. 1st question. will an 800 or 900 bolt into my 620 chassis? how abot a 800/900ss engine? 2nd question; I would assume that i would need the ecu for the new engine as well or can my current moded 620 one be reflashed? will monster headers bolt up to a ss engine? I think i can build a bike that will destroy sv650's buy putting an aircooled 800/900 in my monster chasis. I'm trying to do it this way because i really don't want to invest in setting up a whole new racebike with different suspension, wheels, etc. I spoke to the guy who does my engine work and he didn't think that it was a direct swap from 620-800/900 but wasn't 100% on that. thoughts on engine fitment and ecu... An 800 should drop right in. A 900 might need a little more fussing depending on the year it was made. Late production (2001+ I believe) ones will have the larger through bolt. The one that sliders are usually mounted to. Older ones have a smaller diameter there.
The headers from a 620 wont bolt up. You'll need the longer headers for the bigger engines. But a monsters headers should bolt to an donor engine from a SS, if they are the right headers for the displacement.
There's a few items that need to be dealt with, but swapping a 900 into a 620 isn't a big deal as far as that stuff goes. Hunt around for info on IndustrialGrrls bike. It was a 620 that had a 900 transpant and Chromo2001 and she documented a lot of the process.
a 999 frame would rule out 3 classes. i would like to be able to race this in ss, gp, sb, sptmsb. plus i would guess none of my suspension stuff would bolt up. trying to build the bike with as little as possible to race as many classes as possible. Ideally i would like this;

thanks panda. I was thinking that the 800 would be easier. the power difference between the 2 is pretty small in reality. and it seems alot of 900 engines have huge miles. I would like to just drop in as much as possible and save $ for races and tires, and a slipper, [bacon]
800 if you just want to drop it in and go. '05 vintage ftw [thumbsup]

Yeah, the 900 really went out about 10 years ago, so you've got to deal with that fact. On the up side it's a tank of an engine with a lot of potential. Ca-Cycleworks worked up a 100+ HP carby 900. Another benefit to the 900 is the dry clutch. Make for easier service and may be less costly when it comes to adding a slipper.
