Title: Rode in freezing temps today
Post by: He Man on December 14, 2010, 01:21:14 AM
And snow can suck it. Well I can check this off as one of the more stupider things ive done.

BTW: Scorpion XDR = teh SHIT. also Gerbing heated gloves pretty much stop working around ambient 17degree weather. Especially not at 50mph. 16miles. 5 miles of pure scary shit. :-X

Woah!  That's hardcore!

I rode to work when it was -6 Celsius once (about 21F), but there was no snow on the ground.  I try to stick to temperatures above freezing, and once they start salting the roads, I'm done until Spring.

make the beast with two backs that.

I ride because I enjoy it.

And that definitely does not look enjoyable.

I was nice and cozy on my way to work this morning in my 5000lb cage, and the outside temperature read 12 deg (F).  Saw a guy on a supermoto cruising along in traffic.  No fairing, no handguards... NO THANK YOU!   :o

I've ridden down as cold as 9F on my M750.  I've also ridden to work before and wound up riding home in the snow.  This happened twice on the M750 and once on the 900SS.  Walking into the bank to cash my check I got some funny looks because I was caked in snow ~

That's about my limit. I feel the cold. I'm ok with the heat, have ridden in 47-50 deg C and glue melted out of the helmet. The cold I don't like.

9F this morning. Had so much gear on I just about roasted on the 6 mile ride. I love it. But again, it's only 6 miles.

He Man, you're a better man than me to be riding in that kind of nastiness.

I'll wait for Spring.

Is that how you treat your bike?  Shame :(

While driving home last night coming out of NYC, in blizzard like conditions,  I passed a poor S.O.B. on a BMW.  I'm sure he was hating life at that moment.

Scary shit I'll bet, snow is no fun for me. I love sliding the cage around in the snow, the Duc, not so much.

That's damn cold for anything more than 15 mins.

Interesting you say the Gerbings NFG at 17F.

I'm planning to add some Barkbusters for frigid riding, to accompany my Polly bar heaters.

let me correct that, you dont feel the heat from them anymore at that temp, it pretty much just keeps your hands mildly uncomfortable.

Dont forget that i dont have handguards. if i did, they would work much better.

He Man, why don't you try the Buell ones?  If you have bar ends all you would need are a couple of large bolts that fit through the holes in the lever pivots and you are done.  They are not expensive, go with your Buell theme, and you can drill some holes on them in the summertime, then tape them shut for next winter.  Get them now before HD gets rid of the stock.

He Man,

would you consider a Polar Bear dip in the nearest Lake for 2 minutes when the temperature is like 15 degrees ?

About 10nyears ago I made the trip a couple of times from Marin to Sacramento (Folsom) at temps around 32 deg. pretty miserable. The thing that prevents me from riding here in Oregon when there is ice or snow is that...

"Motorcycles are exempt from the requirement to carry chains or traction tires and may not travel when chains or traction tires are required on all or certain vehicles."

I've played Golf in as cold as 28 degrees ....but no way am I riding at that temp.  ( I may have ridden in that cold 1 time when I was much younger as I was when I played Golf in that cold ).

Ya ya got it. My heated grips are similar, I can feel the heat at 15F but, the wind still make the hands hurt. Windguards would rule.

I would guess all else being equal, heated liners would be best, but cost and convenience make heated
grips satisfactory.
In snow and salt country I have no need for riding (commuting) any colder than  15F.

btw, if I didn't say it before, you're nuts.

I passed a guy on a Harley yesterday driving into Queens with the temp around 30- it didn't look appealing.

I get the chills just reading this thread.

I'm headed down to Florida for a few weeks where I can shake, rattle and roll around on my Superglide.

it really isnt that bad if you are properly geared up. Ive been riding back and forward to school everyday since that snowy day. Though i probably would never ride in the snow again, i had to bust out the water hose to clean the salt off my bike.

Coldest I every rode was -16C (3F). 80+kph (50 mph). No snow though.

I just took the M750 out today to fill the tank.  It was 28*.  My hands were frozen but the rest of me was ok.  Glasses kept fogging up in the helmet though.  My bikes are stored and I'm officially done on two wheels till the spring.  It's makes for a long winter when you're staring at your bikes in the garage all the time.

i put powermad handguards on my duc, they worked alright, btu the best thing i did was the big "polar hands." those big things taht slip over the entire bar and up your wrist. the only problem is if you have to pull your hand out. sometimes it's hard to get your hand back in quickly.

i have also found that when the temp hits the teens there is no comfortable. you jsut stay less uncomfortable depending pn your gear.

also, if you don't ever wash your bike it has a ntural protection from salt  ;D
