Title: How hot? Post by: uclabiker06 on December 25, 2010, 05:02:13 PM I used permatex high temp silicone to seal the joints for my exhaust and it keeps leaking. Says that it protects up to 500 degrees F. Does it get hotter than that down there? I found a leak and am probably going to use this stuff this time around; it goes to 2000 degrees F. Recommended by a fellow of the dmf.

Post by: 671M900 on December 25, 2010, 10:17:35 PM It's not really that the silicone can't handle the heat, but that the leftover fuel in the exhaust gas breaks down the silicone. Use copper, or muffler weld (which I prefer)

Title: Re: How hot? Post by: 671M900 on December 25, 2010, 11:01:50 PM That should be fine. I used a tin of something called "Muffler Weld" at my local napa. Sort of a putty sealant, works great, and you can smooth it out so it looks neat.

I really don't feel like disassembling the whole system... I know its easy but I don't have a lift and my neck hurts from a crash I got into a while ago. Anyways, thanks for the advice. Actually screw it, I'll probably take the whole thing apart cuz I want to know that its done right cuz i'm anal [thumbsup]
