Title: Bracket Removal
Post by: DTR on December 31, 2010, 03:56:34 PM
Before this frame gets powder coated, I want to remove these brackets from either side. What are the consequences of removing these from either side? New rear-sets that don't use these as mounting points and I'll have to fabricate some other way of hanging the exhaust? Anything else I should  consider before I get grinder-happy? No, that's about it.

Perhaps you might want to weld on whatever bracket you might need for hanging the exhaust?

What rearsets do not use these brackets?
Do you have them?

+1, I think all rearsets use these as the mount points, otherwise you'd be putting all your weight on the engine itself.

Well, maybe he could use S*R rearsets, along with the longer swingarm pivot shaft.

Haven't done it myself, so YMMV.

That's true. And stock s*r rearsets are dirt cheap. are the pivot shafts the same diameter?

AFAIK, they're the same diameter.

Not sure at all if the brake hardware on an SSS rearset will clear a DSS.

Good points: How do different type (mounting points) rear sets mount and where does the brake apparatus go? The new titanium mufflers are high mount and I was going to fab a bracket off the sub-frame portion of the frame. I'll have to solve the rear brake issue before the sparks start to fly....

The only ones that don't mount to those brackets that I know of are the s*r rearsets. The brake side of those has a bracket for the master cylinder. Others, like the cyclecat have a bracket to relocate the linkage to the lower sump bolts.

Thank you everyone for making me apply some sense to this: I don't want to add any more load to the engine (i.e.- the load of my Fat A** on the rear sets). The engine cases have been welded up and added stress isn't necessary. So, I'll stick to some modified OE ones just until I get this 18 month (plus) project back on the road.
