12/31/2010 me couple of buddies decided to hit the canyons in Malibu, CA - thinking since they are by the beach the chance of ice/frost was not going to be an issue. While jamming up this road called "Stunt Road" (no joke) I see what looks like water run off so I back off the throttle and coast through it. As soon as I hit the "water" the rear wheel took a major slide and when it regained traction jerked the bike back in line and bam! I was on the ground. I got up and walked to the side of the road while my friends came back.
After a few minutes I assessed the situation. What I thought was water was a nice 3 foot long patch of black ice across the entire road....not sure how my two other buddies didn't crash (good for them). Possibly because of the balaclava I was wearing when I landed my helmet shifted and I hit my chin on the road (wearing a full face helmet) and I ended up needing 6 stitches to my chin. Damage to me was minor, chin, hurt ankle and hurt left thumb. I was wearing riding gear but not leathers...the riding jeans helped but I still managed to get some nice road rash on my left knee.
Damage to the bike seems somewhat minor...broken turn signals, a small nick on the tank (getting a new one anyways as this is is expanded), ground down rear brake pedal, and the clutch took brunt of the blow, picture below:

All the springs popped out...gonna need to take a look later next week and see if all I need to replace are the PP, Clutch cover and springs.
Anyways, be safe out there and happy new year!

Sorry to hear you got bit. :(
Best of luck healing up!
Looks like you'll need a clutch hub as well.
WTF? Malibu CA?? I thought it never even rained in Southern CA much less ever got cold enough for any ice, black or otherwise, to form anywhere. This really puts the zap on my head. ???
Dayum!! Glad you got off relatively well Arai!! I almost headed that way yesterday myself.
Yeah, it's been wet and REEALLY cold here in SoCal the past few nights. Some of the northern facing slopes in the "hollows" are in shadow most of the day as well. I would not have expected this that close to the ocean either.
I was thinking the same thing. Ice??
Anyway, glad you are OK and on the mend. The scooter doesn't sound like it's too bad off either. Lesson learned. The hard way. [thumbsup] [moto]
Ouch!!!
did you have sliders on of any sort?
Glad you are pretty much OK. Ice in Malibu [bang]
Well, come ride in Colorado.. You can find ice & snow around the corner in July,Glad it wasn't bad. cheers.

I think that'll be my story from now on.
Congrats on not being hurt too bad man. Sucks that it happened.
Dude! Glad you're okay!
I hit that patch today... Twice!
Around 11:30am it was ice. Around 3pm it was running water again.
I slowed WAY down, pulled in the clutch, and put out both my feet like outriggers.
I'm just a lucky sonofapregnant dog, I guess.

I'm glad that you and the bike are mostly okay... I have such a fear of hitting ice like that, it's one of the reasons that mine is parked in the garage right now.

haha
Don't believe what you saw on TV during yesterday's Rose Parade. We've had one of the coldest and wettest winters (so far) in 30 years I can remember.
New clutch hub - check
Lesson learned - check
No sliders on the bike - hate them.
Bacon glad you cleared it man, I keep thinking of what I could have done differently to prevent the accident but in the end, shit happens and it was in the cards for me.
Naproxen to the rescue.

Ice in Malibu [bang]
It's pouring rain, but the hills about a 1/2 mile behind my house are covered in snow. :o
I live about a 30 minutes from Malibu.

Sorry to hear about the spill and I hope you mend well.

Yeah, they aint pretty, but they saved my bike from more serious damage twice, once each side. What can I say, I'm clumsy.
Like everyone else has said, glad you're alright. Rest up and heal well. [thumbsup]
glad you are okay also....
now you can repeat that Forrest Gump line about being bit in the buttocks....

I hear that but I can't get over the looks....they remind me of training wheels.
I'll finish licking my wounds and see how bad the damage really is...as always there is usually more then meets the eye.
To everyone else, thanks for the well wishes, I had forgotten how much crashing sucks.
I got a chance to remove the clutch this morning...seems like I'll be needed a new drum hub and new springs.
