Title: paper stronger than iron
Post by: zarn02 on June 10, 2008, 09:17:12 PM
i thought about posting this in "tech," then realized it had nothing to do with answering motorcycle tech questions. then i thought about putting it in general, but realized it didn't have a lot to do with bikes in general, either.

though it maybe could in the future...

super-strong paper. check it out (http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2008/609/1?).

could this potentially be the "next big thing" in über-light components? the carbon-killer? or have i missed the point.

discuss.

Claiming to have higher tensile strength than cast iron is akin to saying you can outrun your buddy that has a sprained ankle.  :P

They quote a tensile strength of 214 MPa, carbon fiber ranges from 2000 to 7000 MPa.
Not really in the same league.

However, it sounds like awesome paper, and it could provide cheaper composite parts.

It was good you brought it up, no unfounded statements anywhere.  [thumbsup]

Well, if your buddy has a high pain threshold, you might lose.  ;D

"The only way to decide this is with a quick game of carbon fiber, nano-unit paper, gamma ray.  Ready?"
