Title: offbrand vs DP and premium carbon belly fairing dilema
Post by: Rawr01 on January 02, 2011, 11:14:02 AM
i found what looks like a pretty good deal on a carbon belly fairing. the piece is from MDI and i'm wondering if anyone has any horror stories they would like to share? my thinking is that the piece will probably be very thin and brittle, but i don't know how much of an issue it will be since it's a stationary piece and not as affected by wind and vibration as something like a fender would be. but then there's exhaust heat. maybe i'm overthinking this....

Buy it and let us know. According to the website, almost everything for the Monster line-up is "low on stock"

Not much to think about - heat is not an issue, it would have to be touching the pipes to melt. Unless you have the side routed Temignoni on an S*R - those bikes require trimming of the Monza style belly pan.
MDI products are cheap and on the lower end of quality (from reviews), but that's not likely to mean much for a belly pan.
Make sure you get the mounting hardware (brackets, bolts, spacers, rubber washers)

What's the price you're offered?

unless the finish is so bad that rocks from the road destroy the front and underside of it quickly. [bacon]

You're always welcome to buy my carbon fiber belly pan: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=44475.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=44475.0)

It had been on the bike for around 5k miles.  No chips, no cracks, still looks new.

PM me and we can work out a price if you're interested.

iirc, MDI products are not just carbon fiber, but are carbon fiber backed with fiberglass for thickness and strength (a cheaper way of doing it).

so, if you are happy with a piece that is "carbon look" imo, they might be fine.

thanks for all the suggestions. i opted to buy the piece offered by the forum member csorin, rather than the MDI piece. based on the information you all provided, the choice was easy.

now, before i instal the piece i'd like to either re-wrap, or, depending on what lies beneath the bandages, clean up and refinish, or completely replace the pipes. can any one suggest a thread that will help me in this undertaking?

one last thing. i'll post this elsewhere, but i am looking for a CF rear mud guard.
