Title: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Post by: techno on January 02, 2011, 03:49:26 PM I'm in the process of reassembly after putting in new springs. They are the standard non adjustable ones.
Anyone with a manual (or who knows) tell me how much oil goes in each fork? I think its either done by fluid measurement or distance from the top of the fork. I'd prefer to do it by measurement. BTW, did a search but got nothing specific Title: Re: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Post by: stopintime on January 02, 2011, 04:11:28 PM Page 189 in my '06 manual mention 400cc. That's the chapter about checking the forks.
Two pages later, in the chapter about filling the forks, it's 450cc (or as they now say: 0.450 cu dm) Standard oil level 104mm - also from page 191. It also says 7.5 oil. You can affect the end of compression by the oil level - in case you want to. Edit: you're supposed to pump the cartridge to get all the oil out. Done that? Title: Re: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Done that? and as a sanity check, pump it out into a graduated bowl so you can measure it -- let it run over night. Title: Re: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Post by: Speeddog on January 02, 2011, 05:01:48 PM I *always* do it by oil level, making sure I've purged the cartridge of air.
IIRC, the S2R800 cartridges are virtually impossible to drain completely. Title: Re: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Post by: techno on January 02, 2011, 07:05:59 PM Thanks guys. As always there doesn't appear to be a straight answer.
I have already drained the oil so can't measure it very accurately as both forks were emptied into the same oil pan. I suppose I could measure and divide by 2. I have pumped them and thought I got all the oil out but got some more when I was doing the oil seals. I will go with 450ml and see what the measurement is. There must be a reason why they sell fork oil by the litre. Title: Re: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Post by: techno on January 02, 2011, 10:48:55 PM update - 800ml removed as measured but there was some spillage so I suspect 900.
450 put in one fork easily. I think its lower than 104mm but hard to tell where it is. I have checked and there is no pool on the floor so thats a good sign. Title: Re: how much oil in S2R800 forks? Springs obtained from GP suspension in Oregon City. They also put a new spring on my rear shock. Both suited for my weight with gear. I went with 5w weight oil. What was in there seemed thicker but past it use by date. Finalised the fitting today and went for a ride. Huge improvement over the standard set up. Much firmer and less flighty if I hit bumps mid corner. |
