Title: Need help w/ axle question...
Post by: Timmy Tucker on January 08, 2011, 01:37:20 PM
Trying to figure out which front axle my bike has. I'm looking at a set of replacement forks (adj. Showas) that use a 20mm solid axle. I've measured it in a few places and am not sure which measurement is "the" measurement. Was hoping you guys could help educate me a little. And sorry about the shitty pics.

Here it measures 25mm and is hollowed out to accept a hex/allen socket:

Here, between the fork and wheel, it also measures 25mm:

Here, on what I assume is the threaded end, it measures 25mm on the outer diameter and approx 18-19mm on the inner diameter. From pics I've seen of other axles, the part between the 25mm end and the threaded end is the "nominal" 20mm section, correct?

Based on this info can anyone tell me if this is the "solid 20mm" axle that I need to make the other forks work?

Edit: Sorry, forgot which forum I was in. Thanks for moving it. And DAMN that was fast.

Axle diameter is measured where it goes through the bearings.
Unfortunately, can't be measured when the wheel is on the bike.

That looks like the 20mm axle to me.
What bike are those adjustable showas taken from?

They came off a '99 Monster 900, Showa 41U's.

EDIT: FWIW, I just looked at Omaha Ducati, and the 2000 M750 and M900's all use the same front axle. Probably safe to assume that the 99's are the same as well, no?

j v: "hello, i'm here to muddy the waters!"

i'm looking into getting that same 20mm front axle shown above - normally solid and heavy as hell, made out of titanium and with a hole down the center so you could run front axle sliders.   then you'll see pictures, and be all "wtf mate. where's the nut on the end? the hollow axles have a bloody nut on the end!"

what's the koolaid guy say?    OOOOOHHHHH YEEEAAAAHHHHHH
