Anybody have experience hauling their bike with this specific pick up?  I'm thinking of picking one up, how much does the bike hang off the bed and onto the tailgate? Any problems with this?

Worse case scenario, got with a $24.95 uhaul trailer that has a ramp built in.

6 foot bed from what I'm reading and my bike has a 57.8 inch wheelbase.  Add 18-19 inches for the two other halves of the wheels and that's what needs to fit lengthwise, which puts it hanging out of the bed and onto the tailgate.

I'm asking if anyone has any practical experience with the same truck.  The bike won't fit fully in the bed, i know that.  What are the difficulties I should anticipate?

You shouldn't have any problems. My Dakota has the same size bed and the bike straps down without a problem, just can't put the tailgate up unless I angle the bike and turn the bars.

Only thing to consider is where you're attaching the tie downs. The Dakota has perfect points on the bed floor to tie down, make sure you have good sturdy ones in the Ranger.

  I picked up my '94 900 with a 99 ranger. Tied down the front with ratchet straps and drove the 250 miles home. Been a long time now, but it seems like the rear tire weight was on the bed  and the tailgate was open to clear the tire. Zero problems.  21 mpg at 75 mph.

 What was even more fun was the guy I bought it from had an 6 in wide aluminum rail that he sat on the bed of my truck. Then he backed off 30 feet and rode the bike up that thing into the truck. Scared the shit outta me.

'94 Ranger owner here with bike hauling experience.

My truck is a long-bed and a Monster fits completely inside the bed and I've closed the tail-gate too.  Standard bed?  The rear tire will be on the gate, but I've done that before with other trucks & not had issues.  (YMMV)

If you have to have the tailgate closed, you can slide the rear of the bike to one side and it'll fit w/ tailgate closed.  I've had to do this with my dakota.  The tailgate lacks an inch or two closing completely ~

I've hauled my bike in the back of my Tacoma many times with the rear tire on the tailgate.  No problems.


Just check the tailgate design of your truck first.

If the tailgate's held with cables and not folding metal bars, make sure the cables are in good condition and not frayed and ready to break.

I use a ready-ramp on my Tundra.  Works like a charm - it's both a ramp and bed extender.

I have a 2000 ranger, 4X4, extended cab, and 6 ft bed and I have a sad story to tell about the ranger and the duc.  This very weekend my wife and I were riding and about an hour from home when I gave my S4R some juice to pass a car.  Last time I looked, the tach was at about 8K.  Then the bike stopped firing on one cylinder.  Had to park her at a micky-dees and road home 2up on my wife's bike to fetch my ranger and home-made ramp.  We then drove back to the S4R, loader her up, and drove home.  So I am here to testify that a ranger can indeed haul a monster.  It is a shameful thing to do, but it indeed, can be done. 

Still don't no what is wrong with the S4R but the ranger is great. 

if you get desperate enough you can use just about any vehicle to transport your bike.

6th bed and the monster is just a few inches shy of 6 feet? Go diagonal.

I don't bother to close the tailgate.  I use some strong cam straps to hold down the bike.  The straps attach to the frame of the bike and Ford has supplied some great loops to attach the straps to the Ranger. 

These are the straps.  Just ordered some more this morning.  Oh, they are also great for whitewater rafting.

I have a 5' bed and I just have it at an angle and it doesn't rest on the tail gate, but you cant shut it either. Some beds, the cables can be moved to lock it at a 45*.
