Title: Phillip Isl, scenic route.
Post by: rendang on January 16, 2011, 03:18:51 AM
My brother-in -law is racing his 250 duc in the International Classic Challenge at PI next w'kend (22an23 jan), so I'm heading down this Wednesday morning. Anyone who feels like coming along for some or all of this trip is wellcome.(come on Gino you KNOW you want to)

Been going over the recent threads and poring over the maps to maximise the number of corners per kilometres travelled and would post up a map if I could. But I had a couple of questions if anyone can help. One for Heather anyway, I want to get from Murray Valley Hwy to Omeo via Mitta Mitta on the Omeo Hwy but I notice you went via Kiewa Valley Hwy any reason for that caus the Omeo looks more curvacious, at least on the map ? or is it in bad condition ?

Also has anyone been south from Mansfield along the Mansfield-Woods Point rd to Jamieson and then Warburton-Woods Point rd or the Eildon-Jamieson rd to Eildon ? These roads look absolutely sensational on a map and I don't mind a bit of dirt but I don't want to be battling thru gravel for 100s of Ks.
                                             cheers, an thanks in advance

Between Mitta Mitta and Anglers rest on the Omeo Hwy there are gravel sections. Quoting from Aust M/cycle Atlas "there are some quite rough gravel and rock sections which can be a test for the unprepared".  Don't know anyone who has ridden but I'll ask around.

Mansfield-Woods Pt road still looks like dirt on Google maps.

Woods Pt - Warburton - don't know but looks like dirt on Google maps.

Just in case you're wondering - No I'm not adverse to riding the odd dirt road.  But I don't know anyone who has ridden these roads so I can't be of much help - sorry.

But I will ask the DOCVic ride captain about riding these roads for you.

This part of the road will forever be known in our household as 'the divorce road'* ... and it so nearly was. At times I thought I was going to have to ride out alone and send in the choppers.

I don't know the exact numbers but amongst the 50km or so was about 5kms of perfect bitumen ... the rest was a combination of gravel, rocks, mid-corner boulders and fallen trees blocking the road.

It may have improved in the past 11 months but surely there are better routes for a Monster.

* EDIT: Or the Oh-Me-Oh-My Hwy

Yes I would not advised you take this road as you might end up with internal injury and don't forget the divorce

Oh NO Betty  :o :o    You didn't make Jukie ride THAT road did you?  [roll]

I would say after all the drought breaking rain we've had in the last four months that the gravel sections would not have improved any.

...the Mitta Mitta/Anglers rest section as others have noted isn't tar.....if you can roll across it no deadlines, or severe wet, its REALLY WORTH RIDING!...have to soften the bike off though...breathtaking scenery etc, etc etc.... [moto] [thumbsup]

Maybe we could organize a "Red and Ride" weekend.  [wine]

Ok, thanks very much for all that, I think I'll give the Ohme ohmy a miss and make some enquiries about the Woods Point roads in Mansfield.
