I went for a little cruise yesterday in my S4RS, Wasn't that hot out, maybe 75-80. Turned into the main street where there was some traffic, and idled down the road for about 5 min. I looked down and the temp read HI. about 1 min later found some open road and the temp immediately went down to the normal 220 or so. Is this normal? Is there a fan or something that should kick in when your not moving?

You have a cooling fan that should kick on before the temp reads HI.
If it didn't it could be a bad sensor, fan, relay, or ecu.

I had the same problem. Local shop checked to make sure the fans work and they do so now I'll be replacing the sensors.
Just in case you decide to go this route... Don't bother looking for model specific sensors. Basically every single water-cooled Duc uses the same sensors. I checked Monsters, SBK's, ST's etc...

Quick update. Just got my bike back from the dealer. They said they went over every sensor, fuse, and switch, couldn't find anything. Checked coolant levels and found it to be very low. This is after a 15,000 mile service was done about 10 miles ago? Anyway, after filling the coolant, the fans started working. They are not sure why. That doesnt sound good..... :P Anyway, for now the fans kick on and all is well. Not sure how long that will last.

That actually makes sense.
The sensor for the ecu must be 'lower' in the cooling system than the sensor for the fans.
Some sensors, if not immersed in coolant, won't read.
I'd be happy...Only question is where did the coolant go?
Well, I can only think that the dealer didn't fill it up all the way up after the 15K service. I would have noticed a bunch of coolant coming out of my bike.

Did they change the coolant at that service?
How long between the service and the problem?
Not to sure if they change the coolant, maybe not? It was a major 15K service so I just guessed. Had the overheating issue 1 week after service, and the first ride.
Never noticed the overheating before this.

There was probably an air bubble that cleared during your ride, or after the tech finished the test ride and he forgot to check the coolant.
Well, I guess its shame on me for not checking coolant levels. This along with tire pressure, and oil change will now be the pre-flight inspection.
