I recently installed Speedymoto Tallboys and have them adjusted so the throttle assembly is about 1mm from touching the tank at full right turn.  I figured this was the right thing to do, but I have recently seen pictures of folks around here with the bars at some major angles.  Angles large enough where there is no chance they can turn the bars full lock in either direction without something hitting the tank.

Is this common?

I don't have clip ons, but from a 'common sense' point of view, I'd say that's not the way it's supposed to be. Seems to me it would constitute a danger for the safe operation.

You can have the sweep back angle where you want for the riding-/arm position you want.
The pictured angle is extreme.

The problem might be that the bars/controls will touch/hit/damage the tank.
This is prevented by adjusting the steering stops (lower triple against the frame)
It might limit your steering radius, which will surprise you in a parking lot a few times until you get used to it.

IMO, the turning radius is already bad enough...that would make it just about impossible.

Thanks for the input.  Just making sure I wasn't being overly conservative.  I think I would crank it once, damage the tank or the controls, and get pissed. 

I'll leave it as is.

1 mm is not enough - adjust the steering stops a little and save your tank  [thumbsup]

Whenever i go down my clip ons twsit and hit the tank anyway, so theres no real point. The turn signal button is 1mm from hitting my tank. and the right side matches my left.

i wouldnt worry about  damaging anything anyway because it looks like you already have a dent on the left side. :P

The only issue is turning, with something like that, its very easy to forget how little turning radius you get and youll pinch your hand, go OWWWWW and try to let go but realize you cant cuase its pinned and drop the bike. but if you are aware of that, then no big deal.

I did clip-ons as well (Swatt) and it reduced my turning radius considerably.  I also can't sweep them back as far as I hoped, which really makes the whole mod a lot less valuable to me than I expected.  Having my hands lower helps a bit, but more sweep would have been awesome.

Some clip-ons push the controls forward a little through offsets, which would probably help with the radius somewhat.

Put them where it is comfortable for the kind of riding you do. Adjust steering stops accordingly. If you can't do a good u-turn in a parking lot because you've reduced the steering lock-to-lock sweep, you can either adjust it, or adjust your riding style (like hop off, spin the bike around by hand more quickly, and get back on).

my guess would be that nobody with the super crazy sweep angles is actually riding much with them that way. I know that when I had my tommasellis I was constantly trying different angles for the first two weeks and the only pictures I took where at the initial install.

but as to them not being functional with a restrictive angle, I think you would be suprised at how you can "make do" when you find a riding position that really works for you. the only time your really going to full lock is in >5mph parking lot situations anyway, not a big deal if you have to do a 15 point turn.

my woodcraft clipons had some wierd fitment issues like this...
i didn't have any problems hitting the tank... my problem is that the brackets for the clipons that clamp on the forks actually touch the frame a little bit, to the point where i could just barely not use my steering stop for the left side because i couldn't lock my steering if i did. it's strange.... and i was worried... but then i realized that i rarely slam it lock-to-lock, and when i do, i'm just careful and slow about it. i mean, it BARELY nicks the frame.

all the gains from switching to clipons really negated the one tiny fitment problem.

this sweep angle is absurd IMO (in the picture above).
someone is going to break their thumbs.
