Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: Blue on January 21, 2011, 07:48:57 AM Below is a previous thread on the Eye-talian HDs.
HD Ameracchi (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=30903.msg535708#msg535708) Here is a brief description and photo of my '69 350SS from the thread. It has been in the family since it was new and I have owned it for the last 15 years. The '69s are a bit unique due to their place in the model history. I am not sure what you know about these HDs already, but I would be happy to help anyway I can. [thumbsup] Here is a picture of my '69 Sprint 350SS. My father bought it brand new in '69. The quick stats: 350cc, single cylinder, pushrod, dry clutch, 6volt, 4spd (right foot shift; 1 up, 3 down). It weighs around 300lbs and puts down an arm-wrenching 25hp at 7000rpms. An absolute blast to ride (when everything is working). (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2768/4052423347_f1940bda04.jpg) Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: sbrguy on January 21, 2011, 07:56:34 AM why is everything reversed on it?
but it looks liek a really cool bike. Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: Blue on January 21, 2011, 08:08:40 AM why is everything reversed on it? but it looks liek a really cool bike. Everything is not reversed. The clutch, front brake and throttle are the same as on our Ducatis. The rear brake, shift lever, kickstart lever and side stand is different than post 1975 bikes. But this was common pattern on European, British and even good ol' Harleys before the US government mandated a standard pattern in 1975. Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: akmnstr on January 21, 2011, 08:16:03 AM I warn you that owning a Vintage Bike is a whole different animal. Doing 65 on an old bike seems like doing 100 on a modern bike. You'll need to drag your feet and down shift to stop it. Parts may be hard to find. No o-ring chain so that will need attention frequently as well other unknown issues. You'll end up down shifting when you want to brake. You'll get brain cramps trying to remember where the reversed controls are. Hope your not dyslexic. But other than that it should be big fun.
I vote, buy it! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: Grampa on January 21, 2011, 08:21:16 AM my only real concern is.... I want a Ural. ;D
if I buy this....and I doooooo want it badly, my want for a Ural is greater. After having done a few track days, my plan had been to sell the 1098...get a Ural and a dedicated track only bike. With the Ural....The wife and even the kids can go for a ride with me....with this, it's just me ;) I want to help my friend out, but I'm leaning towards not getting it :-\ Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: zooom on January 21, 2011, 08:30:18 AM if I were in your shoes and had to choose between a Ural and the HD...I'd have to choose the the Ural...but that is me personally...
Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: ducpainter on January 21, 2011, 08:37:16 AM With all his money...
I'd get them all. :P Either way he'll have a cool bike. I'd pick the Ural too bp. ;) Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: MadDuck on January 21, 2011, 08:42:20 AM I've ridden those things. Years ago when they were new. It is completely beyond me why anyone would want one. I can fill you in on all the details but all I can imagine is that there is some attraction for total funk. ? ? ? Want a funky single? Try to find an old BSA Victor or the street version, Shooting Star I think they named it. Far and away better than the Aermacchi (sp?). Or a Gold Star or Norton Manx and then really have a piece of history. Hey, why not an old Ducati single? You'd still be miles ahead. Send me two grand and I'll send you enough pieces to build a 620 even. [cheeky]
Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: Speedbag on January 21, 2011, 10:31:06 AM Buy it! [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: slowpoke13 on January 21, 2011, 10:33:18 AM I want a Ural too. Sell the Jeep, the M400, the MadAss, and 90% of my worldly belongings and just travel. I could pack my bags and travel (albeit slowly)
Title: Re: Should I buy this Harley? Post by: mitt on January 21, 2011, 10:41:23 AM I say pass. Those are for museums now, not the road. A Ural would be much more useful. My bro-in-law had a sprint 350 new, and it was the worse bike he ever owned, and he has owned a lot of bikes.

I raced my 250 this past season in SMRI's Historic Vintage UltraLightweight class and had an absolute blast!! $2200 might be a bit high, so try to negotiate it down a bit if you can.

Post by: justinrhenry on January 22, 2011, 06:16:06 AM it looks uncomfortable and underpowered. it wouldn't be a good commuter bike or a trip bike, so it's uses are very limited. i say don't buy it.
