Title: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: ab on January 23, 2011, 08:42:32 AM My very first ride on frozen lake - ice on Pit Bike yesterday 1-22-11. Having never ridden dirt bike ever and ofcourse on frozen lake, this was a fun fun day.
It took about 2 hours of manual work (shoveling) by five of the riders. What a dedication, I mean in 15min I was dead tired shoveling, I do not know how they did it. Fun times. I crashed three times and Thank God the other riders did not run me over. Camera used - GOPRO HD on helmet 2011_01_22 BukeyeLake Lieb Island.mov (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgonmGqbH_w#normal) here are some pictures I took and one or two of me on pit from afar. shovelling. This was back breaking work for over two hours. I gave up in 15. had to build the track first. find boundaries by drilling the ice. it was actually fun going out of the track into the snow top. Still sore. It is really really bumpy and you feel everything. Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: Latinbalar on January 24, 2011, 12:16:39 PM the 15" of snow to get to the ice of the lake. If you notice it was tough to get to the loop. But once on it was good to go.
Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: ab on January 24, 2011, 04:27:24 PM I added some more pics to show the fun we had. ;D
We had to do lots of tests (drill) and find how far we can ride and if it can support us etc. The shovelling was the shity part. The previous week, someone had brought a snow blower and there were quads that cleared and created a track. This time apparently no luck so had to do it all manually. Got to admire the dedication for the love of the fun. Yes, getting to the loop was shity part but fun at the same time. Watched lots of donuts being made [thumbsup] I should have tried that in hindsight. next time. The ice is pretty pretty bumpy the whole way especially on the corners. All in all, one of the fun times I ever had. I broke the pit bike plastics so I got to find it and pay my friend that let me tag along. Next time, I will be on the 450. That should be awesome. I am still sore and need to get under-armour asap. Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: fastwin on January 24, 2011, 06:18:35 PM That really looks cold!!! Glad it was 50 something here. Y'all are nuts. But in a good way!!
Do you drill the ice to make sure how thick it is. Remember, I'm from Texas. It's not a stupid question. ;) Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: dark_duc on January 24, 2011, 06:29:46 PM Dang that looks like a blast! [thumbsup]

But in a good way!! Do you drill the ice to make sure how thick it is. Remember, I'm from Texas. It's not a stupid question. ;) Yep, to check the thickness. I saw pictures of a quad that got submerged half-way in there the previous week ( i missed going there coz i overslept darn it ). So you have to scout the area and drill and figure out where it is not safe. In addition, we don't stand in the same area (huddle) etc as you don't want all that weight in one spot. There are some basic precautions that need to be taken. Mind you this is a man-made lake and it is not deep where you will drown (so i was told ;D). You will just get wet and get mad than anything else. So the danger factor is minimum. I can't wait to get back out there next weekend. Darn it , I really wish I had the under-armor. Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: monstermick58 on January 25, 2011, 04:54:47 PM That looked like a lot of fun but I dont think we here in Australia would have any chance of this happening to us.
But who knows, with the strange weather patterns happening around the world. Yes lots of fun Mmick Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: vw151 on January 26, 2011, 10:16:01 AM I was up there a week or 2 ago as well. Got some pics. Not sure if I know you or not. but here are my pics.
Actually, I looked again. I must know you. It looks like you rode one of pat's pit bikes and rode up there in his bus. As did I a few weeks ago. The pic of me looping a wheelie is on that same black pit bike lol. Would have saved a lot of pesky shoveling. [cheeky]
Title: Re: Pit bike - frozen lake - build/shovel track = fun times Post by: DoubleEagle on January 26, 2011, 04:53:27 PM I used to Ice Race on Buckeye Lake back in the late '70s.
Used a Pickup Truck w, a blade on front to make the track. There were several different classes including a Pro division. I rode a Yamaha IT 175 . We used 1/4 " sheet metal screws in knobby tires . It was cold as all get out and after 10 laps where I could reach a top speed on the straight away of between 60-70 mph I'd come in and my fingers would be so cold they would sting for 15 minutes . I won the 1st race I rode in , but after that I never won again . I have 3 medals still hanging on a wall from those Ice races. (http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn198/DoubleEagle_photo/DSCN0645.jpg) In the years after, the Winter weather turned warm and the Lake never froze deep enough to ride on . This is the 1st year I've heard about riding on the Lake since the late '70s.
