Ducati Monster Forum

I'm planning another Muenster Run for Sunday, February 27th.  It will be a relaxed riding day with a lunch stop in Muenster.  Leave from the DFW Airport area around 10 am and be back in town by 4 or 5.  Works out to be about a 200 mile day.  I will post a gp.x route map in the next couple of days so everyone can have an idea of where we're headed.

I believe the forecast is 50 degrees.  I think I'll have to pass on this one.  Maybe when it warms up a tad more and isn't superbowl sunday.  Plus I have to imagine there is still going to be a ton of residual salts/sand/dirt/grime on the roads that I'd like to avoid.

I do like that ride and the last time I did it before Thanksgiving I was beat to death by gusting winds ahead of a norther. I knew the cold front was coming later in the day but the forecasts were wrong about how strong the wind was going to be. The Busa felt like it had barn doors bolted on each side!! :P Gusty ass side winds all the way there and back. I deserve a do-over. I'll watch the thread as the ride date gets closer. [moto]

Yeah, I'm hoping in the next four weeks we'll get back to our completely unpredicatable, "Could be 40, could be 80" kind of late Februaury temps  [bang]

If it's too crappy weather-wise, we'll just have to plan another one.

On a related note; does anyone know how good the recorded sound quality is on a phone?  You know like if I just wanted to record the sound - not necessarily the video - of Ducatis blasting by at 140 mph.  This is just a hypothetical situation, of course...

My bike wont do 140 so i am out of the sound group.

Top speed really isn't important, just full-throttle sound.  I'd like to get sound clips of differrent bikes running different exhausts. 

My bike's sweet spot for exhaust note is 6k.  The rest isn't quite as deep and rumbly as that particular rev area.

Well if you want the ultimate sound, I will have to be there with BLQ!!  So count me in, I will talk to mindy and if she wants to come then there will be two of us.

Ha-ha!  THAT'S what I'm talkin' about  [thumbsup]  And for sure bring Mindy - this will be a fun ride and a fun group of folks - lots of new faces.

As far as the sound clip thing goes, several of us made this run about a year ago.  There is a nice long stretch of wide open road (I won't get into too many details on this  [leo] but most people here know where I'm talking about) that we had stopped at to enjoy the scenery.  One of the people in our group used the opportunity to do a top-speed fly-by...  

Let's just say that by the time he passed our location, the sound was... impressive.

SO, the idea would be to record as many bikes and exhaust note combinations as possible within our group at this single location (hopefully we could get at least 6 or 7 different bikes to start off with).  Then you could put them all - with an individual link and notation for each like, "2008 Monster 695, D&D exhaust" - in a single thread "sticky'd" to the DFWM forum... "Sounds of DFW Ducatis" or somesuch nonsense.

Might actually be useful for anyone who has ever wondered what different brand exhausts sound like on a Monster; a stock set-up vs. Termis, or Arrow, or D&D, or de-baffled stock, etc.

So I ran the Muenster route today and I'm sorry to say there are fairly large sections of 455 going into Forestburg and 373 into Muenster that are total crap.  Looks like the snow/ice storms and a bazillion oil field support trucks have taken their toll.  While none of the ride route is impassable, potholes and ruts in all the wrong places are buzzkill.

Should we postpone this ride until later in the year, or come up with another route, or just ride to Muenster and deal with it?

Damn! Not again. [bang] I thought we were on a roll and they were finished with the road work. I did that ride around Thanksgiving and 455 into Forestburg was patched (although a real shitty patch job) and not nearly as bad as earlier in the year. Meaning at least it wasn't under "patch" construction and narrowed down to one lane due to work crews.

And 373 into Muenster was 99% fine. What happened to 373?? Damn oil field/natural gas boom! >:( I thought the Barnett Shale work was trailing off big time. Guess not. And I'm sure the icy roads didn't help much either. :P Guess we all need Supermotos now! [thumbsup] [moto]

922 from Tioga to 372 North into Gainsville is a great road as an alternative.  Then 16 miles to Muenster on hwy 82.  Then back through St. Jo after the Muenster loop onto 677 South and East on 1630 until we pass the construction and hit a road south to pick up 455 again.  Or take 677 South onto 922 back to I35 and some can split home or finish off on 455 to Dallas North Tollway.

In thinking about this some more, let's plan on the 27th as a ride somewhere   [laugh]   I like Muscrat's suggestion so I think if we just count on being out all day - starting around 9 or 10 and being back in town by 4 or so - we'll be in good shape.  

The important thing is RIDE!  Sunday, February 27th... BE THERE!!!  [evil]

Man, I don't know.... I'm not really familiar with that part of the ride.  I always start these Muenster group rides from Grapevine Millls so I'm open to suggestions  [moto]

Might be kind of a stretch from Flower Mound to Tioga just to start a Muenster run.

I used to run that route toward Muenster before Lake Ray Roberts was built. Would eat at Clarks (or not) and take 372 out of Pilot Point up to Gainesville, then 82 to Muenster. 372 outside of PP is kinda under water now. ;D Used to go around the barricades before the lake filled. I can say I've riden on the bottom of Lake Ray Roberts. [laugh] Now you have to take 922 just north of Tioga and tie back into 372 to Gainesville.

I was there at Clark's BBQ Saturday before last and it was PACKED! I was the last person directly seated. Everyone after me had a good long wait. Lots of locals came in saw the crowds and walked right back out. Sure could go for a big ass plate of their brisket and sausage right now!!!! [thumbsup] [bacon] [bow_down] Damn good eatin'!!

I'm asking because if we start Westward that will work for me but if we don't I'm cutting off at 922 south of St. Jo and heading back Dallas-way. I don't care either way, I will adjust my plan accordingly.

At this point I think we just do the "normal" route to Muenster that leaves from Grapevine Mills Mall (the one with the googlemap link).  While the road situation in some places is not ideal, with all the crappy weather we've been having lately most of the other roads we might take won't be any better.

If the weather is good I'm in for the whole ride, traffice be damned this time.   [thumbsup]

Route report.

I'd really like to make this ride but Sunday is out for me. I did manage to free myself up today and burned big kitchen points on a solo Muenster run. Yummy German lunch at Rohmers was calling! ;D

Lisa is right, some of the roads have gotten worse since my last Muenster run around Thanksgiving. Everything is fine up to Decatur, no issues. And 730 north out of Decatur is also fine. Despite all the oil field 18 wheeler traffic. Nothing to complain about as usual. When 730 t-bones 455 as you head toward Forestburg it gets a little funky. LOTS of oil field truck traffic and the road has once again taken a beating. Last year it sucked then it sucked some more due to the road repair construction (and I use the word "repair" reluctantly [bang]) and then was passable again after the roads crews went away. It's back to f'ed up. Mainly the far right side of the north bound lane. I stayed in the left side of the lane and really stayed 110% focused on the road condition. Most of the shit was from center to right side but there were also some bad spots on the left side too. Several times when it was clear I drifted into the oncoming lane to avoid crap in my lane. Funny, I came back the same way and it didn't seem as bad in the other direction. I did not ride the north loop out of Muenster so I don't know about those roads or the one running south from St. Jo to Forestburg.

Still the roads weren't horrible but a few sections are not good and smooth by any means. Shadows on the road from nearby trees hid some road damage and caught me off guard. 922 to the east of Forestburg had the same issues just not as bad. And once you turn north on 373 off of 922 and head toward Muenster the first 5 miles had an issue here and there (nothing like 455 or 922) and the last 5 miles after the 4-way stop at the stockyard was perfect. [thumbsup]

Funny, starting near the 1171 and 377 intersection I started noticing road kill skunks. But the carnage went all the way to Muenster!!!! It was like there was a mass migration and massacre of skunks in the last day or two!!! I swear every mile or two it was "Yep, there's another one!" Maybe one dead raccoon and a squirrel and about 75+ skunks!! It just cracked me up. I won't get the skunk smell out of my nose for a week! See how many you count tomorrow.

Also watch out for asshole oil field truck drivers. I was born and raised in a family owned trucking business so I know trucks and drivers. But there were some real "special" ones out there today. [bang] Several pulled out in front of me from side roads just as I got near when they could have easily waited a few seconds for me to pass by. A couple of assholes kept putting their right side tandems on the shoulder and even further off the road to kick up as much dirt and rocks as they could as I followed them. It was pure bullshit! Other truck drivers didn't seem to have that problem! And when I could finally get around those two just as I passed they both drifted over the center strip and into the oncoming lane to put the squeeze on me!! Not just a little bit but A LOT!! Like they were bored and wanted to make the beast with two backs with the motorcycle riders. Stupid, dangerous shit!

No biggie today but the forecasts say it will be breezier tomorrow. Nothing horrible ... which Lisa and I have experienced before on that run! [bang] 45+ mph wind gusts on full faired bikes suck. That was what my last Thanksgiving run was like. Knew a norther' was moving in that day but the forecasts really soft played the wind. It was twice as bad as they predicted. I got gale force side winds going up and back. :P Wrecked havic on my upper back and what's left of it after the broken neck. [thumbsdown]

Yep, thanks Brian for the update - it's just sad to remember how little traffic that area used to have.  Barnett f%^(ng shale is to blame for sure.

Oh well, for anyone planning to ride with us tomorrow, just make sure and bring your powerful bike - the sure fire cure for assholes and crosswinds alike... jus' sayin'

In watching the weather just now, sounds like the possibility of rain will be later in the day and towards east Texas.  I'll keep an eye on the situation in the morning and if it looks like Trouble, I'll make a decision by 8:30.  Watch this space   ;D

Last i heard malynn had a broken collarbone, broken ribs and lacerated spleen. She has feeling in all extremities and was alert. Prob gotta have surgery but she should be okay.

Thanks to everyone there on the scene for helping out and getting the bike back to the house. Also thanks to Lisa for being there at the hospital with us. Just got home to trade the moto for the truck before heading back up to Denton Regional. She's there in the 3rd floor ICU, room 10. She'll be there for at least 4-5 days to keep a close eye on her. The impact was on her left side and that's where all the injuries are.

Broken bones:
clavicle (collar bone)
scapula (shoulder bone)
minor bone in pelvis
couple ribs
couple thoracic vertebrae

ruptured spleen
lung contusion

Spleen is ruptured and in a fragile state. The doctor says there's very little internal bleeding which is a good sign they'll be able to keep the spleen w/out having to remove it. That's why they want her in ICU for monitoring as her situation could change suddenly.

She's in a good amount of pain but now that they've gotten all the tests out of the way they should have her on a push button morphine setup.

I'll keep you updated.

Jeeez, sorry to hear about this. I clicked on the thread thinking I'd read good things about the ride, maybe see some pics and get a skunk road kill update. Not this. Glad she's OK. Not that she's "OK" but glad it's not any worse. We will keep her in our thoughts and prayers. [thumbsup] It's been said but it's worth repeating, let the group know if she needs anything.

Thanks everyone. She's situated in her room now and will most likely be there all week so if you get some free time, I'm sure she wouldn't mind a visit. Text messages are good too just to say hi.(msg me if you need her number) She'll be pretty bored having to sit still in bed the whole time, so anything y'all can do this week to help keep her spirits up will be a HUGE help right now. She's got her morphine clicker, but she's still in pain. No solid food for awhile and no liquids for at least another day until they're pretty sure she won't need to go into surgery.

I hope you have a speedy recovery, Malynn - I do not know if Milli and I will be able to make the designated visit times, but we will definitely try to send flowers or something for entertainment along. Several years ago I wrapped a car around a tree while out on a 'spirited jaunt' and suffered similar injuries (clavical, ribs, lung, etc). The healing process took time, and while it seemed difficult, it only required diligence and encouragement. Remind yourself that you will be OK, and that you can do it.     Milli and I will happily come entertain you or bring a meal AND entertainment when you are ready!

Sorry I had to miss the ride yesterday guys.  Malynn I'm really sorry this happened.  I hope that you take your time with the healing process and get well as soon as possible.  Things like this always make you think twice about throwing a leg back over the motorcycle again as there is such a fine line between the enjoyment we all get out of it and unfortunate events that can hurt friends and family that we are close to.  If you guys need anything, just yell.  Get well!

Quick update; this afternoon her vitals were starting to indicate that her spleen was bleeding too much so they decided to go ahead and remove it. She went into surgery just before 5 and should be out in an hour.

Out of surgery and everything went smoothly. No issues.

Actually it will probably shorten it now that they don't have to monitor her spleen. Spinal Dr. will be in tomorrow to discuss her vertebrae fractures. The assumption right now is that she'll probably have a brace.

Better a brace than spinal surgery. I hear that can be a bit tough. :P [bang] Well at least the spleen problem is resolved. Sorry for the spleen surgery but those are usually pretty straight forward and not too invasive. Hopefully that was the case here. I've had friends go through it OK. Hope she has a good spinal/neurosurgeon. Mine was a great mechanic but as a human being he sucked! Complete dick. Hope she fares much better than I did. [thumbsup] [beer] Praying for a good night's sleep for her. But in ICU or any room they come in 24/7 just to wake you up to see if you were asleep!! >:( Give her our best.

It sounds like they might be able to move M out of ICU soon so be sure and check in if you plan on making the trip North for a visit. She loves her iphone and it never leaves her side, so if you're looking for an easy way to provide her with some entertainment, I just found out you can "gift" an iphone app by going through the app store and gifting it to her email address. Cheaper than flowers and it's instant. PM me if you don't have her email.

I'm going to go visit today right after lunch unless the timing is bad with her moving.  I assume they would move her to a private room in the same hospital.

I'm glad I got to spend some time with Malynn yesterday afternoon. The tube is out of her lung, she's out of ICU, & looking good. She seems to be really enjoying the morphine [thumbsup] ;D
